What's everyone reading this week? It's roughly mid-October now, and presumably the weather is starting to change for a lot of you, is this making you hunker down and read more, or are you getting in less reading due to fall maintenance/chores?
QOTW: Have you ever traveled anywhere special to see the fall colors?
I've been out of town for the past two weeks, and I thought I'd be spending a lot of that time reading, but it really didn't happen at all. As a result, I'm way behind on my reading!
I'm currently in the middle of The Night the Lights Went Out, which was a book club pick for last month, and I missed the meeting due to my trip, but I'm glad I decided to read it anyway because it's really good! I'm also need to read Salvage the Bones by Thursday for my other book club and I haven't started it yet. Whoops!
During my trip I also started on Season of Mists (The Sandman #4), but I think I made it through the prologue and didn't read anything more of it.
QOTW: My H and I have driven a couple hours away from us, towards Leavenworth and Concrete, to look at the leaves, but there are so many evergreens in the PNW that I feel like we don't really get the same colored leaf experience that people on the east coast get.
I'm currently reading Pachinko for a book club. I am not very far into it yet and don't know anything about it, but it is interesting so far.
It looks like the new Kate Atkinson book Transcription is available at the library for me soon, so I just pushed back my hold. I think I need some more time before I'll be ready for that.
QOTW: I grew up in New England, so I never have traveled anywhere to see the fall colors. But I love fall and going on a scenic drive to look at leaves sounds wonderful to me now.
I'm reading Lethal White by JK Rawling. I love the Cormoran Strike series, but for some reason I'm having a difficult time getting into this book.
Fall is usually a very busy time of year. However, I've cut back on the time I spend on PTA things so I have less stress and more time this year. I'm at 45/40 for my goal this year.
QOTW: No, but we used to live in the NE, right along a Fall colors tour route. I miss true Fall! Fall is my favorite season.
I am binging on Judy Blume books this week. I read Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing to my daughter and have decided to read more for fun while I’m waiting for the new Sarah J Maas book.

I just started Column of Fire on audio after abandoning The Last Mrs. Parrish. It was so slow and uninteresting I had to give up. I even read some spoilers and it made me want to continue less.
I'm reading The Way of Kings by Brandon Sanderson and enjoying it while I can. I've only been able to read to right before bed the last week and can't stay awake. I have 800 pages to finish by Monday before it's due back at the library so hopefully I can find some time.
QOTW - Not really. I'm in the heart of it in WI. I usually end up in Door Country for a relay race during a fall weekend so by default get to enjoy some beautiful fall colors during my miles.
I read The Senator Next Door - Memoirs from the Heartland by Amy Klobuchar. She has been a US Senator (MN-Dem) for ten years and is thought by some to be a potential Presidential candidate for 2020. She has solid credentials and experience (HS valedictorian, Yale undergrad, U Chicago law school, law firm partner, twice elected county attorney), and seems pretty reasonable about a lot of things. She really stresses instances of bipartisan cooperation she’s been able to achieve, and I’d say she’s got some sound bites at the ready for a bigger campaign. The 2015 book release seemed smart - like the perfect thing to write a few years before you make a run for President, when you “have the time,” and sales of the book might later float you during a campaign, and she doesn’t have to mention Trump once.
Two minor points: I wish she had more specific experience on environmental issues, since I think that will be a huge issue for the next US President (the current one, too, if he put any value in peer reviewed science). Some of her praise of other politicians hasn’t aged well (i.e. her fellow Minnesotans who have been accused of sexual harassment/assault), but that’s not her fault. On the whole, she seems qualified, reasonable, and likeable. The Washington Post pointed out in an opinion a week ago that she might be too reasonable to be elected President in this era of fire and brimstone politics. I’ll be curious to see what she does next.
QOTW: I love fall. We experience it here and do all the little festivals and stuff, so I haven’t traveled far to see more of it specifically.
I’m reading Erotic Stories for Punjabi widows. Like it ok, but not totally captivating. Listening to American Fire. Interesting so far
We live in CO so over the years we’ve gone on a few drives as visitors have wanted to or as part of other fall trips. Otherwise it just kind of happens and isn’t the primary reason. The trees in some neighbors in Denver are pretty great too.
I finished The Good Daughter last night. There was a lot of heavy stuff in it. I also have been picking (not on purpose) books that have a parallel to stuff happening either directly to me or through out the country. This one had a lot in the was really relevant to me recently.
I started A Wrinkle In Time. I'm only a chapter in.
The weather has been crappy here. My co-worker said that it has rained every day in October so far. You would think I would get more reading in but TV has been winning out more.
QOTW: I've never really cared much about fall colors. I think they are pretty but I live in an area where there are a lot of trees so I see the colors every day. I may take it for granted.
Blood Communion, Anne Rice - 4 ⭐️ (I will always love Lestat and I don’t care what you think!) Six Scary Stories, Stephen King - 5 ⭐️. This was a quick read and all the stories were just the right amount of smart and creepy.
QOTD: I grew up in Vegas so I’m amazed by any and all signs of autum, even in my own yard - lol.
I'm back to plodding through Salem Witch Judge by Eve LaPlante. It's been slow going, but it's interesting. I've got fewer than 100 pages now so there's a light at the end of the tunnel.
QOTW: I live between the Blue Ridge and Appalachian mountains now, so we get pretty good colors here. I've been to Boston/Salem in October before, though. Never taken a dedicated drive to see the leaves, though.
I finished The Stone Sky (#3), NK Jemisin, 4*. I found the series compelling and yet slow to read, overall I liked it. I have started Young Jane Young, Gabrielle Zevin. So far an easy read.
I am at 52/52 books for the year - I already increased the number once, not sure if I will again.
Our weather is cold (not out of the 40's today) and rainy this weekend, plus DH is busy all weekend, so yes, I am hunkering down and reading (and napping!) which is so awesome. I love low key weekends. We still seem to keep plenty busy during the week.
QOTW: I live in NW PA and fall is beautiful here. I have never traveled specifically for the see fall colors, but enjoy what is available on local drives.
I'm basically reading brain candy right now to recover from work craziness--my friend gave me a YA series called The Selection, and I read the first five of six in four days. Tomorrow I have a flight for work and I am using that time to read A Spark of Light by Jodi Picoult. I am excited to read that one and see how she handles the topic of abortion.
We go to my parents' cottage in northern Wisconsin to see pretty colors most falls. Not this year, though.
My mom and I have always wanted to do a Maine trip in the fall, but we haven't been able to make it happen yet.
Earlier this week I finished a Darker Shade of Magic, which I really enjoyed. Definitely recommend. I'm annoyed that I am already over my hold limit at the library so I can't sign up for the next one.
I started Transcription by Kate Atkinson on Friday but I have been too busy to really make any progress.
QOTW: I grew up in New England so I kind of take the foliage for granted. We did go to Utah last September hoping for some nice fall hikes and got snow instead.
Read: Kill the Queen by Jennifer Estep 3.5 stars/fantasy This was interesting in that it combined gladiators with fantasy and a quick moving plot of revenge
The Outsider by Stephen King 3.5 stars/mystery thriller horror The first half of the book is a really interesting police procedural type murder mystery, and then it changes to the supernatural where I started to lose interest
Murder on the Orient Express by Agatha Christie 4 stars/classic mystery The audiobook is great and I definitely did not see that ending coming
Total so far for the year: 119 QOTW: I have never seen the leaves change, seeing as they don't change in Florida. Maybe one year I'll take a trip to do so.
I've been on a romance binge. I read pretty much all the Kristan Higgins books (my goodness she has a formula!) and then someone on my local book recommended the Walsh series by Kate Canterbray so I read most of those this week (heavy on the sex, but the plot in half of them is actually pretty good too.)
