Has anyone been to Colombia? We're going for a week over Thanksgiving and splitting our time between Medellin and Cartagena. We want some beach time and it sounds like we need to get out of Cartagena for that. Has anyone been to any of the areas close to there? We're looking at spending 2 nights Hotel San Pedro de Majagua on Isla Grande but the reviews for all of the islands are all over the place.
Anything we shouldn't miss in either of these two cities? We're looking at riding the metrocable and doing a day trip to Guatape from Medellin and exploring the old city in Cartagana but those are the only things we're set on.

I’ve been to Cartagena and loved it. We stayed in the old city and took a day trip by boat to the hotel you mentioned — it was lovely and we had a great day!
(The only downside was the terrifyingly small boat relative to choppy water. I popped a blood vessel in my hand from clutching the side so tightly — we were bouncing up and down like a flume ride!)
The old city is relatively small so you can knock out all the “can’t miss” stuff in a day or so. We spent four nights there and ate our way through town. We also took a salsa dancing lesson.
I went to Colombia last year. We went to Santa Marta over Cartegena. Most of the people we spoke to - locals and tourists - said that was a great decision. We took boats to most of the beaches (one we hiked through Tayrona National Park - about 2-3 hours?) and they were all amazing. I highly, highly recommend it.
