Because it amazes me that people take the initiative to dress up without someone telling/encouraging them to do so. I am not talking about teachers, daycare workers, bank tellers, store employees, etc. More so people in an office environment with less contact with the general public.
I think that it's awesome. Our secretary dressed up today, and a great deal of the college students will. I have yet to see any of my co-workers dressed up.
We used to encourage it, but our work environment is at an all time low in terms of fun. I think it should be encouraged since we are a health center that sees kids.
I had my donkey pjs/suit that would have been pretty comfy today.
We had about 75% of our office dress up today. We're a competitive crew and give out prizes for best group and best single costume, give candy to everyone, etc. Whole divisions plan group costumes around it.
But, we basically look for any excuse to have a party around here. Sales people are wild!
Do you mean randomly, not an office sponsored "hey- let's all dress up!"?
Where I work, people don't dress up. Never seen it in 11 years. So, yes, if someone came to work in a costume, I'd find it really odd. I wouldn't care - to each their own - but I'd find it an odd thing to do.
If I was in an office where thats what people do- well then of course I wouldn't care. DOn't know that I would participate or not, but wouldn't think twice about others doing it.

Yeah, I meant randomly. As far as I know there is nothing going on here such as a costume contest and I've seen several people dressed up.
I can't imagine my office environment having a Halloween costume contest unless it was tied to a fundraiser for charity.
I've never worked at a place where they dressed up for Halloween. Engineers can be quite the boring bunch. However, at my last company, we did a fundraiser around Halloween where you put money in the jar of the person that you wanted to wear a pig costume for the day. It was a lot of fun and it raised a lot of money because people really wanted a certain person to win. We donated the money to a local charity. We also had a spooky themed Halloween pot luck luncheon so everyone could get a good look at the person in costume.
We don’t have a dress up thing as a company. Maybe some departments do as I saw more people dressed up in HR than anywhere else. But some people do. It doesn’t bother me. I think it’s fun when there is some kind of contest etc. But I wouldn’t do it without. A few years ago the “Generations” group had a “dress as your favorite decade” thing. I went as the 90s. Aka basically a slacker. I def got looks.
