I just got my BFP yesterday I have 2 potential job chances in the works:
1. I interviewed for a job at another company on Wednesday. I don't know if I will get this one or not. I think it went well. If I get it, should I take it knowing I am pregnant and will need maternity leave in about 8 months? Do I tell them upfront? Will I be there even long enough to qualify for maternity benefits by the time it comes around?
2. Today, a hiring manager for an internal position at my current company called and wants to set up an interview. If I get this one, do I mention being pregnant? Will my benefits just carry over to the new position?
Is it bad etiquette to accept a new position knowing you will need to take a leave?
1. I would tell them upfront if/when you get the position. "I just found out I'm pregnant, and my due date is X. I know I won't be eligible for FMLA, but I plan on returning, and I'd like to discuss how we'd handle leave."
And no, you won't be eligible for FMLA, but there should (hopefully) be a company policy on maternity leave.
2. In that case, since it's internal, I might hold off telling people until the end of your first trimester, if that's when you were going to tell anyway. Your benefits should carry over since you're within the same company. But my advice might vary based on projected workload, relationship with these people, etc.
It's not necessarily bad etiquette to take a job when you know you'll need leave, but again there are a lot of variables at play. Do you NEED another job? would this be a step up for you in a long-term career plan? Do you plan on coming back to work after the baby is born? Eetc.
