We need to get one started, now that I am caught up on October.
DH is coaching basketball again (practices don’t start until December, sign ups now). He is trying to form a team of girls DD knows, the best ones from last season plus a couple of school mates, particularly a couple of taller girls lol. One friend will be a disaster, but the other two from school will be good. Hopefully they will all have fun and he can stay positive. He was a bit impatient a couple times last year.
Also we signed DD up for the spring semester of therapeutic riding. She is doing well with this so far. Learning to ride, getting practice toward patience and calmness, etc. She’s doing great at school too and I think there might be a connection.

DS just received his yellow belt, black stripe and is so proud of himself. I was finally able to watch him during one of his 3:30pm soccer practices and he is so much more engaged when they do drills than he is during scrimmages. It's so frustrating.
DD actually kicked the ball during the soccer game yesterday and stayed very engaged until the end when she totally lost interest. I'm calling that a win. She also did really well in gymnastics. She's really starting to get good at her forward roll and backward roll and balance beam.
After this we're going to totally drop team sports for DS. He clearly hates them so I'm just going to let him do well with Karate since he actually enjoys it and they love him there.
Ds played awesome yesterday at soccer. The comp team practice on Friday was great and he really enjoyed it. The real coaching vs volunteer parent coaching is night and day. I can see how rec league kinda get left behind quickly. So if he makes the comp team we will probably let him join and figure out rides somehow. I hate that it is so different already. He is 6 and does love soccer so I’m thinking we will try.
DS is on a break until January when basketball starts. There is actually basketball happening now as well but I don’t see why we need to do 16-18 weeks of basketball when 8-9 weeks is enough. DS feels the same way. I think he needs the breaks too.
It’s unfortunate that everything is so competitive. His friends are doing private coaching. One is doing another season of soccer, one is doing travel league soccer and one is doing the 18 weeks of basketball. They are 8. It just seems so young for that. That seems more like middle school to me, but whatever. I’d hate to burn him out so young.
DS wants to do football, and it’s all tackle in second grade! So that’s a no go for me. I think I found a park district flag football league in the neighboring town for next fall.
Still debating on DD’s dance. To sum up she wants ballet. I think she would like jazz, but have decided to let her try ballet. Park district is good quality and super cheap which is great but I have to leave work early and boss just went to a FMLA workshop that said pretty much any time someone goes on more than 2 doctor appointments it has to go for FMLA. So since I took DS to PT and OT last year and am doing PT for myself as well as seeing the doctor for TMJ he put me on intermittent FMLA. So I guess I would rather not leave early. So I think I am going with the $$$$ dance studio that has 10:15 sat classes. I hate to use up all my Saturdays but looking through the school year we have basketball in Tuesday’s and baseball Thue and Thurs and GS on Tuesday’s so I guess Sat it is. And cub scouts is up in the air since parents were complaining about 3pm on Sunday’s.
Mustardseed2007, DS is the opposite. He loves group sports and hates individual ones, which is a bummer since things like biking, skating, gymnastics, dance, karate and horseback riding would be awesome for his coordination and balance.
waverly, we also skipped on rec basketball for DS. All his friends are playing, but he needed a break between football and basketball league (practices starting in a couple weeks). He's doing a hitting league one night a week for baseball (similar to indoor golf, but they hit from a pitching machine and then the hit is simulated to a field on a screen). I'm not sure if he'll make a basketball team in high school, so I'd rather he work on baseball.
DD has asked about taking some ice skating lessons, so I'm going to check into that. I also was going to check into a few private coaching sessions for gymnastics - I feel like during her once-a-week class she doesn't really get to work on the things she needs to improve.
Coach A has had a attitude adjustment. She is still doing tons of conditioning but is letting DD and her friend M do more skills at least on the bars. She is also helping DD with her floor skills and not just grumbling when they don't happen. Testing for pre-team should be later this month and I trying to stay positive that DD has a chance but I'm not sure. DD would really excel under the pre-team coaching style (breaks down all the skills into individual components) so DD style of learning. Guess it will be a wait and see. We won't know if she gets to move up or not until the gym closes for winter break.
DD1 has two big swim meet this month. She is shooting for State team relay spots and has a lot of competition. Our meet last month knocked her out of the A relay in both the Free and Medley relays, so were hoping some good time drops this month will get her back on them. This goes on until the end of Februray, so it's not a guarantee. She also particiapted in a fundraising swim a ton this weekend. She has a bicep injory so she didn't swim most of it, instead she used a kick board and kicked. 4350 yards (about 2.5 miles) in 2 hours. Her legs were soooo sore afterwards!
DD2 moved up a level in gymnastics. I just wish she cared a little bit more about it and would focus. She can pick up a skill crazy fast, she just doesn't really care! Lol! She loves it and its fun, but she doesn't really seem to care about showing the coaches how much she is improving, which is the exact opposit of her big sister.
DD2’s soccer season was supposed to end on 10/27. They have had to cancel for the past 2 weeks, so now they are trying to play the final game this Saturday. Sigh. I was really, truly ready for soccer to be over 2.5 weeks ago. It’s The Season That Wouldn’t End. 🙄
DD has one more football game to cheer for. Then it’s over! And we won’t have anything until spring tee ball and baseball.
DS wants to do gymnastics lessons. I am a firm yes. DH and MIL are meh. But he really wants to do it. And we just haven’t given him as many opportunities to try activities as we did his sister. Younger child problems...

We always joke that we hope DD3 doesn't have any interests or talents because we won't have the time or money to pursue them! Fingers crossed she takes up reading or video games!

mustardseed2007, Thanks! We were super impressed! Most of her friends in her swim group swam about 5200 yards which is no small feat, but kicking 4350 yards is just bananas to me!

madringal, I was on my school's swim team my freshman year of high school (I quit after that year because I hated the coach), and I remember just the one mile swim being exhausting! I'm super impressed with your DD!!
DS started an indoor hitting league with a few of his teammates from his travel baseball team. It's only 30 minutes one night a week, but he wanted to do it and it's good for him to have some hitting practice in the off-season.
DD is getting tested for pre-team on Wednesday next week. Coach J wants to look and DD and her friend M. This won't be the deciding testing but more of a where are they at and how do they respond to Coach J. Coach J is absolutely awesome and I feel like DD will excel under her tutelage. I find it pretty ironic that 3 weeks ago we were almost got kicked out of class for not having skills and now are being tested to move up. I really think it boils down to Coach A just doesn't like DD.
So we had DD2’s final soccer game on Sat. On Friday night, we got 1.5 in of rain, which fell onto 1/2 frozen, saturated ground. On Saturday, it was raining sideways and 45 degrees. Cancellation, right??
Nope
Instead, the directors were on the fields with shop vacs and leaf blowers trying to get the water off the fields. Not turf fields. Grass fields. THEY WERE SHOP VAC’ING GRASS FIELDS. WHILE IT WAS RAINING.
Everyone is falling all over the directors on social media and I want to punch them for not canceling the kindergarten games. I know the older kids think it’s fun to play in that weather, but the 5 and 6 year olds just cried. The only reason we went at all was because DH and I are assistant coaches, and we didn’t want to leave the head coach hanging.
Our game lasted less than 5 mins, we had 5 kids total across 2 teams. Glad the season is over!!
akafred, I saw in the other thread you had said the flag football you saw was fairly rough. Would you say rougher than soccer? Also, our neighbor said he thought flag would lead to tackle, so he thought if tackle was off the table than flag should be too.
I wasn't sure if his reasoning made sense. Or if it made sense to try it one season than go back to soccer? He is doing soccer, basketball and baseball. All of them are pretty low key at this point due to their league (church and rec) and their age.

IMO yes, flag was much more physical than soccer. Even though you are not setting out to tackle someone, in soccer you are not intentionally contacting other people. In flag, you are. You still have to grab and pull the flags. Sometimes you hit them pretty much full force and fall down. There were also a lot of tackle games on the sidelines, wrestling and messing around. I was very surprised to be honest. She only played one season so maybe it was an anomaly, but I don’t think so. I don’t know that everyone who plays flag will end up playing tackle. I knew DD wouldn’t. She was in it for one season. No love there.
Thanks akafred. I know one of our friends said football is the only sport where you go for a person rather than a ball. I guess that would include flag technically.
I might push him to soccer next year. He was good at it and it was local as opposed to the flag football team I found was a bit of a drive. I wanted him to have the experience but I’m not really sure it’s worth it. And he does like soccer a lot.
