Who does family game night? Do you do it weekly or monthly? What are your favorite games?
I am looking to start this except a lot of the kids games that they have now for younger kids are not really fun for me. Think like Life (takes forever), Chutes and Ladders, Sorry, Candy Land- all boring.
Kids are older 5 year old and young 8 year old. Some games take too long and are above their level like Clue which I need to modify. Otherwise, would like the games a bit on the older side for them to grow into. For example, we did Stratego, and had fun with two teams. I am expecting it to be when DH travels, so 3 player games which makes it hard because some are only good with 4+ players. Or a 2 player game where I can pair up with the youngest.
Life takes about 45 minutes sometimes so I would prefer something in the 20-30 minute range. The kids do now some card games now. Math games or anything like that would be good also.
Apple to Apple big pictures Upwords (you could do teams adult+kid) Checkers Bingo Blokus Dominos
DD has a bunch of math games with playing cards and dice. Could you ask their teachers if they have any they do in class and they would be willing to share. Last night DD and DH took the face cards out and then each drew 2 cards and multiplied them together whoever had the largest answer took the cards. Person with the most cards won. It took them less than 5 minutes. You could do multiplying with the 8 year old and adding with the 5 year old and take turns.
Dh wants to start game nights over the winter for something to do when it is always raining.
We play card games. Uno is a huge hit. DH got Dos but we haven’t opened it yet. We also play kid card games like Old Maid and Go Fish. But DS is still 4, so he hasn’t yet outgrown that.
Also some adult games have a junior version. Like Clue Jr.
We love Uno. (never heard of Dos). We also like dominoes, rummy, and while this might be odd DH is teaching SS1 (16) and SS2( 14) poker. Yatzee is also a fun game here.
Robot Turtles is great for that age. We love Clue, Life, and lots and lots of cars games. We don’t have an instituted game night, but we do play games fairly often.

We like UNO, Sorry, dominoes, clue, apples to apples. Forgot to add Yahtzee. Love that game.
Also, I realize this is probably the antithesis of game night, however, Life on the iPad is awesome. Everything is tallied for you and the game goes much more quickly than the board game.
For card games, cribbage is good and helps with math. My dad taught me when I was about 6. I love it!
We play sequence jr, headbandz, my 9 year old loves apples to apples. Sorry is good and easy for all. Zingo has different levels of games. We also have a math bingo game that works by taking turns rather than a race to get the right answer.
Uno, monopoly Junior, Kids on Stage, kids pictionary, Travelers of Cattan junior, Zingo, We taught our 8 year old rummy when we didn't have power after the last hurricane, Sorry, the 8 year old loves Clue
I’m in the boat of two older at 14 and 11, so we do lots of more advanced games. Those that scale down well for the 6yo are Mastermind, charades (get an app), checkers and chess, lots of card games, Headbandz. It pains me that he can’t play Scattergories, but he manages at scrabble. Sometimes he chills and watches while we play a round of a game, then one of us plays a round of war with him, or Old Maid or Go Fish.
Count Down Spell Up is a good educational one that goes fast.
callmekd - Clue Junior is a hit here! So is Monopoly Junior. And we play the billboard version of Monopoly which is faster and easier to see who is winning at a glance, so better for kids. DS plays all of these and he’s six.
@heartofcheese- my kids really want Pie in the Face and we keep saying no. Too high a probability of crying and fighting. But maybe we will rethink it.
mommyatty, I'm with HeartofCheese, it's really fun! It doesn't really splatter as much as you'd think and the kids love it! It's a good novelty to have on hand for every once in a while use.

They make each other go first. It's an excellent exercise in sharing...
Cooperative games might be good when it’s just the 3 of you, I feel like there are tons of new ones that I see in the stores or are coming out. My 8 & 5 year old girls like OutFoxed, Hoot owl Hoot, and Community. Also Croak!, munchkin treasure hunt, and Ticket to Ride First Journey which my (new) 5 year old is just starting to pick up. Loonacy is a fun card game we picked up this summer.
