I mentioned in the Monday plan we were invited to a Diwali party. It’s a Hindu festival that celebrates the victory of light over darkness. Our hostess is rocking a sarie and has been unhelpful in terms of what the heck to wear. It’s family friendly. A bunch of little kids will be there. Our school offers extra credit to 6th graders for attending and giving a report to the class on what they learned.
So... it’s not super-dressy. Clothes are supposed to be brightly colored. Beyond that... I’m lost. Any ideas for something I can get that’ll be here by Wednesday? I ordered one dress that will get here today, so I’m crossing my fingers it works!
Personally I would just wear a bright colored top from your existing closet and jeans since it is casual and no dress code. Not that I have ever been to a Diwali party. Is "not super dressy", dressier in TX, you know like the stereotype that women dress up and have bigger hair and make up in Texas? Maybe an existing maxi skirt or shorter swing skirt. Someone posted this dress elsewhere for a cruise, but said they were on the shorter side, and it fit well and has pockets. www.amazon.com/dp/B07DN6MMCR/ref=twister_B07DN6L4K4.
The Diwali celebrations we have gone to have been westerners typical chic casual, Hindu beautiful saris. I think I wore a swing dress over leggings last time. Because that’s my winter uniform.
You can go however you like.. wear something comfy and be prepared to dance and just enjoy the afternoon. DH and I both have some traditional Indian clothing - he loves to wear them, I prefer not to. We both fit in perfectly.
I am not Indian but a couple of close friends are. When I’ve been invited to their houses for events like baby showers or 1st birthday parties, the adults are generally wearing very beautiful Indian clothing like saris or salwar kameez and jewelry. I’ve felt underdressed in jeans/ nice top. My friends say that Indian don’t really do dressy casual. So, based on my experience, I’d wear a dress or formal top/ pants combo. Brighter colors would be ideal if you’ve got several options in your closet.
