I need help brainstorming ideas for a "congratulations" gift for our top performing sales people. This is a gift they get at a big presentation when they find out they won a spot on our annual trip. We've been doing a plaque and a bottle of champagne, but are nixing the champagne this year. It's festive, but ultimately a waste because people don't drink it and we have some folks we can't even give it to.
Do any of you have top performer awards at your work? What do they get?

Our top performers get points in one of those reward systems. It the same system we use for years of service. I’m cashing mine in for Lowe’s gift cards but not everyone loves hardware stores.
No awards here. At my prior company, they gave out cash or visa gift cards. But I think they eventually stopped with that since they technically were supposed to be withholding taxes from it.

Oh whoops. We only gave out in $50 amount though, I wonder if the amount makes a difference.

Do you have to have something there or can you make a list of things they can choose from and receive at a later date? Like those rewards catalogs if you sold so much crap during school fundraisers.
erinshelley21, It's to hand to them when they win the trip, so it would be better to have something to hand to them. Makes the presentation more special.
I love the chocolates idea! We were tossing that around, so glad you guys think it would be good too!

Yes when we get gift cards or tickets or whatever, we tax employee on it. As a matter of fact, employees are funded on dining cards here and they are taxed on it.
I mean this is not going to be helpful at all, but one of my coworkers who previously worked at my old company spent HOURS pulling out the logo from his North Face jacket because he loved the jacket but had ditched the company. >.<
k3am, that's just silly. It probably looked terrible too, when you have stuff embroidered it leaves behind marks and imprint when you pull the embroidery off! He must have really hated the old company to not be able to just wear it as is...
twinmomma, EVERYONE who worked for the old company hated it to some degree. I don't know of a single person who walked away with good things to say about it.
This makes me annoyed again that because I am remote, I get nothing. No awards, no gifts for things like ten years, nada. Everything is tied to your site and I don’t have one.
Company swag used to be popular on my team before that policy changed. Two of the guys wore the polos they got six years ago to the offsite I just got back from.
2chatter, that's crazy! We just shipped gifts to our remote people since they couldn't attend an in-person event. We wanted them to at least get the party favors that everyone else got!
Everyone in my department gets a holiday gift every year with the university and department name and logo on it. Some years it has been great, like polos and these long sleeved golf shirts that I can wear to work. Other years, it has been a really junky backpack, that is still sitting in my office, because it isn't nice enough structurally for me to want to use. Everything has our logo on it. Although most people like working here, so they opened up an online shop where you could order stuff with the department's name (and pay for it yourself) to wear. I got a really nice polar fleece from it that I keep in my office.
