So a few months ago, I was feeling great and trying to run more, and I found this trail race to do. I figured that having a race to look forward to might help motivate me to run. Didn't really work out that way, because DS2 has had 3 ear infections in a row (the fluid never went away) and has been sleeping like crap. So I didn't get to work out much, and I mostly picked CrossFit over running because even when I am tired I can always make it through class, whereas when I run and am tired I just quit after one mile.
Anyway, I did the race having basically never run on trails before, but it was totally fine. The trail was challenging, it was freshly cut crisscrossing this ranch, so we were going through fields with tall grass and Texas forest (aka a bunch of scrubby live oaks with cactus in between). We crossed a stream a few times, and there were a some challenging little climbs and descents. I definitely walked a couple of those.
Anyway, it was a lot of fun. I finished in just over 35 minutes, which because it was a very small field meant that I was the second female finisher! It was really nice not worrying about my pace, I just focused the whole time on keeping my footing (I tripped at least four times but didn't fall) and not getting lost.
About twenty minutes after I finished, it was time for DD's 1 mile race. I had signed up to run with her, since she's only 5 and had never run a mile before. Well she didn't need me at all, she took off at the beginning and stayed in the lead the whole time. There was a lady leading the way to help pace and make sure the kids went the right way, and DD passed her. I stayed right behind her, barely hanging on (so tired). She finished in under 9:30 and didn't even seem tired. I think she's hooked on races (or possibly winning).
Congratulations on a great race! I love trail running for just the reason you said- there's lots more to focus on during the race. And congrats to your DD too!
Yeah, I actually may try taking her on runs, it would make me run more and she'd probably love it. It'd have to be after school though, which is weird (I prefer morning workouts).
