I started watching her videos a few months ago when someone on here posted a link. I'm inspired. She did a 1 yr no buy (make up, clothes, home goods) . I really identified with her reasoning for doing a no buy and am going to do it. It's ridiculous and embarrassing the amount of money I've spent on "stuff" and how much room it takes up.
I'm going to start with 3 months. If I feel like all I'm doing is waiting for the 3 months to be over so that I can buy something, then I will extend it to 6 months. I'll extend it to a year if I still have that feeling of needing to buy something. I haven't decided on my rules yet, but I'm going to write them down and keep them in a prominent spot so that I'm reminded. I think my no buy will just be makeup and skincare since clothes and household items aren't an issue for me. If I feel that they end up replacing not being able to buy makeup and skincare then I will reevaluate
Is anyone with me? I'm not sure if a makeup board is the right place to post updates about a no buy. What do you think?
I wasn’t planning on a strict no buy but I’ve been wanting to really pare down on buying ‘things’ in general. I’m going back to school in January so I really want to only focus on that and not new stuff. I’d be interested in check ins on here. I certainly don’t need anything new right now lol.

It depends. Kids’ stuff, no. I have 2 little kids and another on the way. A lot of things I can reuse bc I’m having a boy the same time of year as my other boy, but for my girl, not really. I have somewhat of a stash of clothes and shoes for her, but not enough to get through summer and start K. Some baby things I have to buy new bc they are worn out or plain broken, but the cost should be under $250 total. Clothes for myself, maybe. I have every season of clothes in sizes 14-20, so no matter where I fall post-partum I’m probably set. I will definitely need to freshen up my underwear drawer and buy a few new bras before I go back to work in September, though. Clothes for DH, almost definitely. I need to replace maybe 2-3 pairs of shorts for him, but he wears jeans and polos 2 days/week and dress pants and a logo company shirt the other 3 days. He will have a 7-8 week paternity leave in the summer, so minimal wardrobe is needed for that. Makeup, most of Q2 and some of Q3, yes. Same with skincare. House stuff, almost definitely. I have lofty dreams of Marie Kondo-ing my house during maternity leave, lol (my mom and my son’s babysitter will still be coming PT after I have #3 once DH goes back to work, so this is not entirely out of the question). Two exceptions to this are: new furniture for Kid1’s room (looking at IKEA so not $$$) and possibly Kid2’s room, so I can use Kid2’s crib for Kid3. I hope to finalize Kid1’s room situation at the start of Q1, and make a decision about Kid2 by March.

We're potentially buying a new house, so it'd be potentially tough to do a no buy year. But I am going to be doing a buy only if necessary - so, for example, I bought two pairs of jeans because two pairs didn't work for me any longer. I've gotten rid of a bunch of sweaters and bought replacements. I don't know how much storage space we'll have (we're downsizing so that could mean we have to get rid of a lot of stuff) so I don't want to add anything only to have to get rid of it in 6 months.
I had a really decent 2018 in terms of money on makeup - I concentrated on using up some things and I’d like to do that again in 2019. My goal is to only replace things I run out of, and if I find that I’m just not getting on with a product then I’ll make an effort to pass it on (skincare mainly).
So, not a no buy year, but a mindful buy year. No way would I be able to stick to that for clothing or house goods though - I’ve been working out harder and will need some new stuff eventually and we’re still trying to furnish our house. It’s been a many-years process.
i'm not going to commit to a straight no-buy as i know i have no hope of actually following that, but i was inspired by calico 's recent posts about using things up. reverse rouge i think it was called? anyway, i plan to inventory and sort through things in the new year, and then start tracking the things i am using up. i have a ton i should be using before buying new things, but know that occasional special edition/new release will catch my eye!
I started an 8 month no-buy a few weeks ago. I was probably the one who mentioned Hannah's channel, because I started watching her this fall and am inspired by her methods. As robinsbff mentioned, I did a reverse rouge project this year, the goal of which was to use $1000 worth of product. Some people on the internets only counted things they could buy at Sephora, but I counted all hair/skin/makeup products, no matter where I purchased them. I surpassed that $1000 mark in May. MAY! So I mean, I felt slightly better about the obscene amount of money I spend on this stuff, but I know it's still out of hand.
I’ve been binge watching her videos since y’all posted! She posted a video a few months ago about how she was shocked to hit Rouge in July during her no buy year and went through all of her purchases detailing how it happened even though she stuck to the rules that she set for herself. It was very eye opening!
I've been watching her too and I'm planning a no-buy (or probably "low-buy" depending on your definition). I didn't hit Platinum at Ulta this year and have generally curbed my makeup spending by a ton, but I identify with a lot of what she talks about in her videos. Generally I've done way too much retail therapy, treating myself to things thinking they'll make me feel better, etc. I can justify a lot of things as "self care" when I'm struggling with chronic health issues. I also want to donate and sell a lot of my stuff overall.
I'm just trying to reel myself in the last couple of weeks of 2018. I need to stop feeling like I need to buy stuff before I can't buy any. I have $100 to spend at Sephora before February or I lose it. I'm debating if I should spend it now or not. It's not likely I'll need to replenish anything (like skincare) before then.

I know exactly how you feel with the bold above. It's a constant struggle with anything I do, buying stuff, going on a diet, etc.

How do you have $100 use or lose money?
I had 2500 pts at Sephora and one of the point perks was to cash in 2500 pts for $100. It has to be used within 90 days. I guess that's one of the new Rouge perks.

Dang, that is impressive. I’m $71 away from VIB and pretty meh about reaching it. If the gift card fairy comes on Christmas, then that’s what will push me there. I made Ulta Platinum by a hair this year and only thanks to gifts for others.

I think that money I'd spend. Letting that pass by would feel wasteful to me, but maybe that's my own issue.

I wasn't going to let it go to waste. I just didn't know if I wanted to spend it while on a no buy since it's basically feeding into my habit or just use it now.

Ah, that makes sense. I guess it does depend on the goal of the no-buy. Good luck with it in this coming year! I know how hard it can be.

This is basically me. I was $80 away Rouge, but since I had $55 eBates gift card, I just went for it last week. And for the year, I spent a little over $500 at Ulta.
I imagine my spending in 2018 will be similar. Of that $1500, I'd say $1000 was probably refills of every day stuff. Drunk Elephant is the killer. H likes Jack Black stuff, so I could probably keep Ulta status just with that. I'm at the point where I have plenty of makeup and don't really want more, and I'm so sick of samples, so very, very rarely I'm buying things just because I want the GWP.
But I still find that for $20, few things deliver the joy that a new lipstick does. So I'll definitely be making a few fun makeup buys here and there.
mortomo, Ahh..I had no idea. Do you think there is a staple that you will run out of before the end of your no buy, but after Feb? If so, I would go ahead and buy that. Otherwise, can you use ti to buy gift cards (probably not, but I might try to).
No buy? No not really. Mindful buy? Yes. I started this year with being very careful about what makeup I buy. I just don't wear that much so even though the fun shiny eye shadow pallets make me happy they are a huge waste of money. I did not buy any in the 2nd half of 2018 and will continue that in 2019. I will continue to replace foundation, concealer, lipstick/lipgloss as needed because those are worn every day.
Most of my Ulta spending comes in the form of hair and skin care.

I'm planning to do the opposite! I won't be buying all the things or anything, but I've been on a very low buy for a few years, so it's time to freshen things up, especially my wardrobe.
I am definitely doing a minimal buy for 2019. I do not want to make Rouge again next year! I'm going to replace skincare, shampoo, and conditioner as needed but I'm pretty stocked up for at least the first 3 months of 2019. There is no reason for me to spend a dime on blush, highlighter, make up brushes/sponges, eye shadow, or brow pencil next year. I expect that I will need loose powder, mascara, foundation, and brow gel at some point but I really want to work through all of my deluxe samples and other items in my stash before making any new purchases.
Lip products are my wild card though. I have a weakness for those "All About Nude Lips" and other similar sets. I hardly ever use up a full size lip product - those mini sizes are perfect for my attention span.
I could likely go all of 2019 without buying my make-up, hair and skincare staples (other than vit C serum since you shouldn't stock up on that). I wouldn't be using my favorite products the whole year, but I don't want to be wasteful. I'm going to do my best to use up stuff that I like OK, but isn't my HG.
I'm kind of looking forward to using some stuff that I put to the side because I had found 'the next greatest thing'.

Seriously. Those Sephora favorites lip sets. So good.
Moving this summer really helped to solidify my decision to use more than I buy. I’ve organized the things I want to use up most (skincare, hair products, lip balms and glosses, etc) into small plastic bins that live on storage shelves in the master bathroom, and keeping them visible has really helped me remember to use them. My goal is to empty them all before we move again (summer 2020) which is probably too ambitious, but it has kept me from rebuying stuff like moisturizer when I have a dozen or so deluxe samples staring me in the face.
I made my spreadsheet this morning so that I can keep track of my empties, project pan items and my replacement purchase items per my no buy rules. I also decided to track my spending of items that are not beauty items/groceries/eating out. I categorized everything so I can see where I spend the most money so I can work on that area of my budget in 2020.
I have a tendency to go overboard with spreadsheets and details and then I stop tracking, so hopefully I can keep up with it.
I also used my $100 that I had to spend at Sephora and ordered a few things.
I'm actually looking forward to getting use out of stuff that I haven't used in a long time. I still need to find a few more things to add to my project pan. I have mostly skincare items on my list due to abandoning some stuff when DE came along.
