Samantha Ravndahl made a video about how she's removing herself from a bunch of (all) PR lists because she can't handle the amount of waste. Product waste, packaging waste, over the top presents and bullshit, etc etc. (among other details...disclaimer if she goes off the rails later in the video, i'm posting this only having watched half the video because she can RAMBLE)
The level of it is really mind blowing. She goes into pretty great detail.
I know lots of people love samples in their orders, but I hate them for this reason. I really don't use random samples and it just seems wasteful. I can only imagine how much waste a beauty blogger gets on a regular basis.

the description of the sheer packaging trash (aside from the actual product waste) was mind blowing. She has to contract a private trash pickup!! People are sending her packages with SCREENS EMBEDDED IN THEM. The actual fuck???
eta: hit post before I finished my thought - I actually do love samples, but that's because I use them. I go through products so slowly that sample sizes mean that I can use something up before throwing it out rather than realizing a mascara has just totally dried out and is still 3/4 full. which is what happens with every single full sized mascara I've ever owned. But it does take a certain amount of 1. ability/willingness to just try out random stuff and 2. organization to keep track of what I have and use stuff up before getting new stuff.
I watch unboxings occasionally and just marvel at all the waste. Even the relatively small beauty bloggers get a shitton of stuff. I went on a youtube binge and watched a ton of beauty bloggers purge their stuff, a lot of it not even touched because they got it in PR. (FWIW, they all stressed that they were donating the makeup.)
I watched over lunch. $600 every couple of months to make sure everything is disposed of or recycled properly is insane. For shit that she isn't even asking for.
I can’t watch unboxing videos for exactly this reason. The amount of unnecessary trash gives me anxiety. I don’t care about the amount of free product really, just the lengths these companies go to on packaging lipstick. It’s fucking LIPSTICK. Send it in a simple box and stop being wasteful. I have declined to purchase things from companies that send those ridiculous things to vloggers - it’s such a turnoff.

I have always thought it was insane when they get like 20 shades of foundation and all the lipsticks in a range. No one needs that. I saw her video and the amount of waste is insane, but I still felt like she’s saying no partially because a lot of the items she’s not interested in at all. I think she’s still going to get a lot of promotional stuff. I don’t trust reviews of nearly every blogger because it’s all free stuff.
but I still felt like she’s saying no partially because a lot of the items she’s not interested in at all.
Sure, but that's also waste. She's not going to look at it, touch it, review it. It was all shipped to her for no real reason, and she has to spend time, effort, and money to either donate or recycle it.
A non-makeup example of this is Casey Neistat (sp?), who gets shipped an *insane* amount of stuff of all sorts. He had to rent a separate studio to store it all, and at one point said that he was just going to ebay all the stuff and give the money to charity. (I'm not sure where that went, I never checked ebay.) He did a follow-up video where he said that didn't slow down the amount of packages. Even though he specifically said he would never use that stuff.

I think we agree here. I would respect it a lot more (not sure if respect is the correct word), if they said don’t send me any pr without me agreeing to receive a specific item. That way the blogger still gets it free, but it’s an item they are actually interested in. I didn’t find her video to be all that groundbreaking. I’m glad she’s getting less though. I think it’s all an incredible waste and as i mentioned before I don’t buy their reviews. Remember when a bunch of them went to Ibiza with Nars? Imo most of them don’t even have make up related blogs, or have any particular make up skills. Then everyone raves about the Nars mascara they got for free. I saw a favorite blogger review it (she is 100•% not sponsored) and she said the mascara was utter crap. I haven’t see. One blogger who raved about it use it since.
Another eye opening video I though was Safia Nygard(sp?) did one where she mixed all the shades from you tuber collab palettes from this year alone and it was over 70 palettes. Just from collabs. The amount of makeup being produced is crazy the last couple years. I’d really like to see brands put out well though out collections like once a year and then actually promote those products instead of moving on to something new.
Also ColourPop needs to calm down on their releases. I used to like their brand but I’ve completely stopped caring about anything they put out. It’s like something new every week from them.

I'm not sure I'm following what you're saying. She's removing herself from their lists of people they send shit to. Obviously certain brands are still going to send things she doesn't want, but it's not as if she can stop them. What are you actually suggesting you'd like to see her or any of the other makeup youtubers do? What would be groundbreaking?

It sounded to me that she’d still be getting a ton of stuff, but she asked to be removed from more random thjngs, which is good obv. It seems to me that they usually get all/most of the shades of foundation from a launch, or shadows, or an entire launch (at least from what I’ve seen). That seems like an incredible waste even if they donate the items. I think it would be nice to see influencers get a limited amount of items, those more curated to their coloring and taste. I’m sure I’m just dreaming. This entire concept of reviewing free make up and skincare, claiming they love something after barely trying it and getting paid for it just seems crazy to me. I think I’m also really jaded now after seeing a ton of posts on IG in the last month all sponsored and the amount of stuff these ladies posted is just staggering to me.

But she doesn't have control over what she is sent in the PR packages. Just if she gets sent the packages at all.
I also went through and purged the vloggers who do nothing but sponsored content. Young, almost all British, quit their jobs (or never got one to start), and exist solely on paid PR trips and brand ambassadorships. Nothing they say has any credibility and vlogs about brand trips are boring AF. I honestly don’t know how they keep subscribers.
I also can’t stand when huge vloggers get whiny over PR lists they aren’t on.
Samantha is one of the only beauty youtubers I still watch, and I think this is a great thing. I hope it will inspire others to do the same. Just the waste involved in the packaging alone is insane.

I saw on Jen Atkins ig a few months ago that a lot of people had been asking to receive products without the extras and minimal packaging. I think a lot of the industry is doing it, or at least moving in that direction.

Kimberly Clark (GOD I MISS HER) did a whole thing about samples and why they’re a terrible idea for you as a consumer and that kind of goes along with this whole idea in one of her consumerism videos.
On a related note, seriously I don’t fucking know who to even watch anymore because the big names are all trash and my girl Kimberly is chasing her dreams in music and Stephanie Nicole is kind of over it and HELP I STILL DONT KNOW WHATS GOOD?
"This prick is asking for someone here to bring him to task Somebody give me some dirt on this vacuous mass so we can at last unmask him I'll pull the trigger on it, someone load the gun and cock it While we were all watching, he got Washington in his pocket."

Good news: Kimberly Clark-clark-clark is done with her tour and will be back soon. I just found her on IG.
I decluttered the other day and have a bin of donations and threw a ton of old things out. I want no more samples! Even the deluxe sizes that are theoretically great for traveling I find I don’t use because I’d rather have my normal skin things with me.
Except for masks. Give me alllllllll of the masks.
I love to buy foundation because I always felt like there must be something *better* out there, especially with evolving technology. After throwing a few out, I’m down to 4 and will not repurchase any until I finish one. Armani Luminous Silk is my recent buy and it’s as close to my daily HG as I’ve ever gotten. I have enough loose powder to last the rest of my life, yet the CT pressed airbrush one is my favorite. For some reason, I’m not ready to let go of my loose ones.
