My mom is taking our family on a trip to an all-inclusive resort in the Dominican Republic to celebrate her 65th birthday. We leave tomorrow, and today I discovered that my mom's passport expires in FEBRUARY :-o I know people have been refused travel on account of their passports not having six months' validity. From a cursory internet search it appears that DR doesn't have this rule, but that sometimes TSA/airline agents deny boarding if your passport doesn't have six months' validity? I don't think there's anything we can do with 20 hours left before our trip, and it's such a short trip that if my mom can't board tomorrow then...I guess it's jut canceled. Can anyone calm my nerves that they will let her go? Or...not?
ETA: We're flying Delta, and the website DID let me check her in with her passport info.
I flew to the Bahamas in December with a passport expiring in March. The Bahamas were specifically chosen as the destination due to when my passport was expiring and there were no issues when I left.
You only need validity at time of entry for the DR.
Have fun!
(Also, I am sure you probably know, but there is a passport agency downtown that can do same day passports depending on what time your flight is, but I wouldn't bother, she will be fine)
I think the issue is not so much getting into the other country than it is trying to get back into the U.S. I wouldn't take that bet.
Returning to the US is not a concern. As long as your passport is valid you are fine to re-enter the US. DH returned from an extended trip with less than 1 week on his passport with no problems. Lots of countries have the 6 month requirement because if a person overstays they want to make sure they have a country to which they can legally return.
