Has anyone traveled to Honduras for vacation? Or do you know anything about the area?
A coworker has shown me pictures and it looks amazing. The flight tickets are reasonable right now. My coworker is originally from there so I'm not sure how it would be if I decided to go there on vacation. It would be 2 females at this point. I know so little about the country. I loved, loved, loved each of the Thailand islands as well as Fiji - could it be similar and I would be able to SCUBA dive?
I welcome any feedback. If my friend cannot go, I am seriously considering going for a week by myself. I need a break from life to decompress.
We've visited a few times as part of a cruise and really liked it but we were only there for a day. We aren't divers but it is definitely a diver's location.
We flew directly into Roatan and stayed at Bananarama for a week a few years ago. We don't vacation much and went with some friends but I thought it was fun and safe. We mostly drank and laid at the beach. DH went diving and I snorkeled. We took a boat/ferry down to some bars at the other end of the island and took a taxi back to our hotel late one night, that felt a little less than 100% safe, but we had been smoking some pot (not something we ever do) that contributed to that. We also took a snorkelling tour to a tiny deserted island and had a lobster dinner on tables set up on the beach, that was the best day. Lots of cruise ships stop there too.
Roatan or the bay islands would be safe for two women, and has excellent snorkeling and scuba - we loved it there. Mainland Honduras has a fairly high crime rate, or at least it did, so I’d do some research if that’s where you’re thinking of going.
We’ve been diving on Roatan - the diving is good. The dive resorts are dive resorts. Our local dive shop usually does Cocoview. A friend has done Anthony’s key a few times. I really hate the airport during departure it is super crowded and there is a lack of seating.
We had a great time in Roatan, and thought the diving was terrific (better than Mexico or Australia). I think we went with Harry’s dive shop. Make sure you take anti-malarial drugs! (I did, and still got it and spent a week in hospital!)
