My DH just had the idea that we should go to Austria over Thanksgiving break. I am a teacher and have 6 days off. We would have about 4 1/2 days in Vienna. I've seen it highly recommended here for the Christmas markets which is one of the main reasons we're considering it. We also have two kids who will be 3 & 7 at the time. What else is there to see and do? Should we do a day trip somewhere or spend the whole time there? What were your highlights when you visited?

I love love love Vienna. My favorite is Schonbrunn Palace, with the gardens, the zoo and the palace. It's just on the outskirts of the city proper. I'm not sure how the rest of my recs would play out with kids, since I've never been to Vienna with children, but Schonbrunn seems like a safe bet!
I love the cathedrals/churches/crypts, but that might be less interesting to the kids. They probably would love the Lippizzaner Stallions though. And the Prater!
Daytrip: Salzburg is my favorite city in the world. Your children might enjoy the candy shops and toy stores, the medieval castle/fortress, Mirabelle palace gardens, even just running along the river.
