I’ve resisted saying this but our pediatrician said max 12-14 oz of milk per day. When we switched, she warned thaf formula to milk was not to be a 1:1 replacement. Too much milk can lead to severe anemia. But, I know not all pediatricians were as strict as mine and people here probably already know this about milk.
I was going to say this too except our pedis limit was a little higher at closer to 18-20 oz per day. Although....my DS drinks about 14 oz a day and he’s anemic so who knows LOL
Anyway—-I’d just be aware of it. Most pedis test iron levels so just ask yours to if they don’t.
A family friend’s child ended up hospitalized because they replaced 1:1 with milk. I’m just sensitive to the subject after seeing how badly too much milk can go.
You can definitely get milk of some kind at the airport, maybe whole, maybe not, but it's a sure enough bet that it''s not worth trying to keep it cold from home + the TSA screen situation. The shelf stable boxes are a good solution, but failing that, just buy whatever milk you can get in the airport and move on. I find Starbucks is good for WCM, but others much less reliable.
Even if your kid is used to drinking whole milk, it is not that big a deal to have reduced fat milk on the rare travel occasion if it's what you can find. A lot of fast food places have milk, but only skim. I've given that to DD even when she was still drinking WCM exclusively, because we were on the Garden State Parkway and it's what I could get at a rest area Burger King at 10pm. It's fine.

Thank you for posting this. My 12 month old is totally uninterested in cow's milk but I'm having a very hard time reducing his formula. He's probably having between 18-24 oz a day still. I knew we needed get that number down, but I didn't know about an anemia risk. Although maybe not as much of a risk with formula? Still, I need to be a hardass about this.

I believe this is not an issue with formula because it contains iron.

Ahhh this may be why my pedi didn’t want us to push milk beyond the 4-8oz a day. Both my kids were anemic and needed iron supps.

Formula is fine! It’s milk, spefically. Too much calcium and not enough iron.

Hot damn. I'm glad you posted this. My pedi NEVER mentioned this. My kid doesn't usually have more than 15 ounces a day (it's usually closer to 10), but I'm super glad to know this.

yeah, I know nothing about this and I am going to ask because S seriously would drink 30 oz of milk a day if we let him. To be clear--we don't (closer to 20)

That's scary. I'm really glad my pedi monitors iron levels closely because we were able to catch it (twice) when levels were only borderline.
