Has anyone used something like a hydro flask or similar for toddler’s WCM while flying? She was formula fed (powdered) so I have no experience in keeping cold milk while out and about. Dd is 12 m and drinks bottles. We’re flying across the country to Cali and i’m thinking that it may be easier to keep her milk and something like a Hydro flask and just carry an empty bottle for it. Any tips?
That being said, I haven’t taken my kid on a plane yet so I’m not familiar with the liquid rules when it comes to milk or formula or breast milk or whatever.
When traveling at that age I used the Horizon Organic Milk Boxes. They don’t require refrigeration and I was able to bring them through security when stating they were for the baby. I also bought them for the hotel, because if we were traveling and staying in different hotels they were easier.

I’ve heard mixed things about the shelf stable milk and TSA.

I know it’s ok to take milk of any sort and food etc for baby according to TSA rules. It’s subject to screening which I understand. I’m just thinking it might be easier to store milk in some container to stay cold and then pour into bottle when needed. Rather than schlepping ice packs etc. Especially staying in hotel.
Are you opposed to purchasing milk at the airport? Just about every cafe, coffee shop, and news stand sells milk. Then you could just transfer to a different container (like a sippy cup). I have had some very understanding TSA agents and have never had trouble bringing food for a child, but they might get weird about something that can be easily purchased once through security.
I missed the hotel part. You can request a fridge, and if it’s for medical reasons (like feeding a child) they are supposed to provide it to you, but sometimes they don’t have any available. I generally purchase milk at my destination (hotel gift shop, coffee shop or CVs down the street, etc) rather than bring it with me from home.
This is reminding me of that person who wanted to bring butter with them on vacation. Unless you have very specific requirements for your milk, I think you’re going to find it’s easier to purchase along the way rather than bring with you.

Yeah we’ll have a fridge. I’m just worried about the nearly 6 hr flight. I have no issue purchasing milk at airport or destination.

I can definitely purchase at destination. I’m not opposed to buying at airport, but if there’s no whole milk available I’d rather not chance it.
It says it will keep milk cold for 12 hours. We haven’t tested it but I love that I don’t have to worry if I forget to put the cup away after breakfast.
I’d plan to buy milk at the airport first. If the time doesn’t match up to when she’d need it, then I’d ask when we got on the plane. If they don’t have milk, then I’d have powdered formula as a back up.
We have flown a lot with DD and always just fill up a travel coffee container (I don’t remember the brand) and it keeps it cold just fine. I bring a few empty cups to pour it in and it is NBD.

I would just buy it at the airport for the plane ride. Personally, I didn't worry about giving 2% on occasion. I'd buy WCM at the destination, but just make do with whatever was available for the flight.
I don't think most airlines have any milk on board (or anything beyond what they will put in coffee). I'm pretty sure that's how DD first got to try juice.
For a cross country flight at 12m I would probably put a couple bottles of milk in an insulated bag with an ice pack. I would buy milk at the airport (and be ok if they only had 2%) and destination so I only needed to bring a couple bottles worth.
I’d just buy it at the airport. And i wouldn’t worry too much if it’s not whole. One bottle will be fine. I’ve gone to Starbucks and asked for a cup of whole milk before too.

Yep. Any airport coffee shop will have whole milk you can buy. I wouldn't bother trying to keep it cold and getting it through security.

Do you NEED milk for a 6 hour flight? How old? Idk but once my kids weaned from nursing (16ish months?), they only had 4-6oz of milk a day at dinner? Water the rest of the time..

Yes I need it. She’s 12 months and still drinking about 24 oz or more a day. 😬

Ahhh okay. Clearly I didn’t read at first very well. 😳
It sounds like you've gotten great suggestions. I'd go with the shelf stable milk juice boxes (but I'd introduce it early to make sure that she'll actually drink that). I'm just popping in to say that my 2-year-old got a cup of milk as his beverage from the drink service on our last cross country flight (American Airlines) in December. I guess you can't count on them having it, but he asked for milk when they were serving drinks and they delivered. They had it for coffee, I think.

Good point. I’ll have her try the shelf stable before-seems like a good idea for on the go in general at this point. ETA-we are also flying American.
Lol I’m trying to cut her back....it is not going well.
lol good luck--my 18 month old now uses milk as his crutch whenever he is sad/tired/etc. "mama, ilk! ilk, pweaze!"
Oh boy! I feel like it’s gonna be really difficult for us too. The other night she screamed after her 7 oz night bottle so I gave 3 oz more and.then she screamed some more when that was done. She totaled 14 oz that night 😳. Send help! Lol

I mean, at this point I am not worried. Milk is healthy, it is his predominant form of calcium and dairy (lactose intolerant) and he can afford extra lbs. Once his pedi is concerned I will be.
I’ve resisted saying this but our pediatrician said max 12-14 oz of milk per day. When we switched, she warned thaf formula to milk was not to be a 1:1 replacement. Too much milk can lead to severe anemia. But, I know not all pediatricians were as strict as mine and people here probably already know this about milk.

I was going to say this too except our pedis limit was a little higher at closer to 18-20 oz per day. Although....my DS drinks about 14 oz a day and he’s anemic so who knows LOL
Anyway—-I’d just be aware of it. Most pedis test iron levels so just ask yours to if they don’t.
