At the end of December, I went to my sports med doctor because I had been having pain in my left shin. I could pinpoint the pain so I figured it was a stress fracture, Doctor said it sounded like a stress reaction because I could stand on it without pain. He told me to take a month off.
I did and tried running a couple of times at the end of January and my shin was still sore after running so I gave it two and half more weeks of rest. I tried running again and it's still sore.
I'm pretty sure its a stress fracture, so do I just give it more rest? Has anyone on here dealt with a tibial stress fracture? Is there a certain amount of soreness to be expected? Did you wear a boot if you had this type of fracture?
Thanks in advance for any insight or advice you can give:)
I had a small posterior tibial stress fracture in 2013, towards the top of the bone. I took either 6 or 8 weeks off, but also was limited with other things, i had to go easy with resistance at spin and was doing oh so elegant one legged flip turns in the pool. When i started back up with running it was 5 minute intervals for 30 minutes, increasing each week, only 3 days a week, never two days in a row. Then after i hit 30 minutes, increasing 10% a week. No speedwork for 6 months, no long distance racing for a year. They take a long time to heal. Ive had no issues since.
Did you have an mri?? Ugh, feel better soon. It sucks.
My doctor just thought it was a stress reaction - I haven't been back to him yet. I don't have pain when running, the pain only comes after I run. I just messaged my doctor so I know he will send me in for an MRI.
I had a tibial stress reaction. I saw a sports med doctor & had xrays and an MRI to confirm. My doctor said she treats a reaction and fracture the same way. Mine started off as shin splints but by the time I was diagnosed, it hurt while running, normally it was sore after running & at times, my leg would swell slightly after runs. It also hurt to walk on. I was in a walking boot for a month and was only allowed to swim, do upper body weights and the stationary bike & then she put me on a 4 week reintro to running plan, along with a referral to sports med chiropractor.
If you haven’t seen a sports med doctor, I would try to get in with one.
