I've been looking for a travel rain jacket for my upcoming trip to France/Belgium/Amsterdam in April and wondering if anyone had one they loved to recommend. Ideally it would be somewhat fashionable and longer. I have a trench coat but it's cloth material and not going to cut it on wet days. My current rain jacket is 10 plus years from REI and works great for camping but isn't going to cut it for Europe. Thanks!
I bought a jacket for Lisbon last Dec. from Mia Melon. I really do like the jacket a lot, but it was a huge hassle for me to get it before I left. I ordered it early Nov. and when I finally received it (right before Thanksgiving) it was too small. Emails back and forth stopped and I couldn’t get anything else. It turned out, the distribution center was 20 miles up the road for me, so the day before we left I drove up and they exchanged it without issue. Customer service is definitely lacking.
It is a longer jacket, and a lot dressier than mine from Eddie Bauer, which is what I wanted. The second day in Lisbon, we got caught in a heavy downpour and it was very effective.
Our favorites are from Patagonia, but they're not necessarily fashionable. Husband has a Houdini and I have a Stretch Rainshadow. Both fold up into a front pocket and are super lightweight, small, and have a clip so you can attach them to a bag.
I have one from Merrell that's similar in style to this one (but in a heavier fabric): www.rei.com/product/826025/rei-co-op-la-selva-rain-jacket-womens I love it, so I just keep re-waterproofing it once a year. Unfortunately after 7 years of daily use all spring & fall, it's starting to show some wear around the cuffs.
I have a defined waist, so I find that the belt makes a huge difference compared to the straighter trench style that's more commonly used with breathable laminate fabrics.
And this thread inspired me to stop by the shop on the way home from work yesterday to try on this one. I really liked it and decided to order the insulated version (because it's on sale here) to possibly replace my old Merrell jacket.
Fingers crossed that I love it as much as my old one. If I decide to return it, I think I might go ahead and buy the one I tried on, because I could use a more formal lightweight rain jacket.

Just an update... I got my new insulated rain jacket at the beginning of the week. It's slightly warmer than my old one, so I think I will need an unlined one even more for warmer temperatures. But I do really like the way it looks, and I think it's time to retire my old one. I have a work trip to Montpellier, France coming up in a few weeks, and I'm eager to try it out!
Thanks for the inspiration! I've needed this replacement for a while!
It's so waterproof that I had an open pocket and it collected water and kept it in for an hour before I noticed. My only complaint is the same complaint I have with all hooded raincoats - that the hood comes down so far that I feel like a Sith Lord from Star Wars.
