Tonight is the first night of DD1s divisional swim meet. Training these last two weeks since her conference meet was intense and finished off with a small taper. She swims one event tonight, 3 on Saturday, and 4 on. We are hoping and praying for 2 individual state cuts. Both of her relays are going to state (next weekend), but this is her last chance to snag an individual cut for the 10U State meet! Send her all the good wishes you can! I'll be stress eating all weekend, so pray for me too!
DD2 finished her current session of gymnastics. Since she is done with swim for a few more weeks, we enrolled her for 2 days/week for the next gymnastics session. They have a big showcase in May and she will get to learn her very first beam, floor, and bar routines. I can't wait. She's really progressing, and we are hoping that by the end of this next session she will be ready to move up to pre team.
Good luck madringal, DD1 this weekend. Have fun and don't try too hard
DD hasn't had practice all week because the gym has been closed due to snow. DD is going bonkers. My house has been turned into a gym each day. She is watching U-tube videos on gymnastics skills and drills and then trying to do them. She was whining Wednesday night that she missed chalk and the smell of the gym. DD also wants to add in power tumbling on Monday's after practice to get more floor practice in which is her weakest event.
Competition season ends in April so hoping we will be seeing a move up to pre-team in May or at least talk about it.
Both kids had their first baseball game this weekend. They did great!
DD’s team literally hadn’t had a practice because both scheduled practices had been rained out. Also, I don’t know why this keeps happening to her team, but they are all 6 year olds playing in a division with mostly 8 year olds. So they got their asses kicked, but we didn’t care. DD got to play catcher for one inning. I thought she would be scared, but she loved it! She got hit with a ton of balls, but was totally undeterred.
DS’s team did a really good job at tee ball. We didn’t have enough parents helping, but a ton a parents complemented us for how organized and well-run things seemed. I think we have 2 more parents who will help in the future, which puts us where we need to be.
I sat in 33 degree rain to watch a 1-1 tie at soccer. Intensely disappointing. It should have been 1-0 or 3-0 or 5-0 but the girls didn’t move at the first kickoff - literally - probably because they were frozen.
Tomorrow night should be even more fun - 31 and 45 minutes from home. Super curious if they will call it if it’s below freezing. Three years ago they played on the same field, at 7:45pm on a school night, DS was with me because DH was out of town and there are no bleachers, but it was our first time out there, and there were no lights. I sat on the ground and tried not to cry.
DS had his first away/overnight tournament over this past weekend for basketball. It was only about an hour away, so not too far. It was actually at a Big Ten university, in the city next to the city where I grew up, so it was nice to go back "home." (My parents don't live there anymore, so we had to get a hotel room for Saturday night.) They lost their first two games and won their third game on Saturday. Sunday was single-elimination bracket play, and they won the first game, but lost the second. Overall, it was a pretty fun experience for DS.
covergirl82 - I wish there were the option of “tournament only” teams. Tournaments advance skills and teamwork more than anything else i have seen - it’s the rapid repetition that lets them build, I think. And they are so fun!
Well, Divisionals was awesome! DD1 had some incredible time drops, and made podium with a medal in 4 of her 6 individual events. She even made podium in an event where she was seeded 24th! Her relay came in 2nd so she got another medal there. All around, fast meet, lots of fun, and a success. BUT, she didn't get either of the state cuts she was after. She got within .71 seconds of her 50 back. And missed her 200 Free by 1.7 seconds. State meet is this coming weekend. Her coach told her to go to a time trial tonight to see if she can get the cut in the backstroke, so we will give it one more shot.
Realistically, time trials have never great for her. They are at the end of the day, and the energy and atmosphere is just not the same as a big championship meet. She swam a near flawless swims this weekend, so there isn't even anything we can point at and be like "do this better". It's really just a matter of going faster. Again, that's hard when the energy just isn't there at the meet.
Either way, both of her relays are swimming at state, so she gets to go. She just REALLY wants one 10U individual state cut before she ages up later this month.
Update: no state cut at time trial. Lots of tears tonight, she’s heartbroken. It’s an important life lesson, but man alive it hard to watch your 10 year old not get something they have worked so hard for!
Last night DD asked Coach A about trying power tumbling. Coach A told her it was geared to kids 12 and older. Coach A then asked DD why she wanted to do power tumbling and she said she needed more floor time and strength to improve her floor skills. Coach A liked this and told DD as long as she kept up with the group she could try it one day after practice to see how things went. I'm really glad I made DD ask about it instead of me because I'm pretty sure if I asked I would have been told no she isn't old enough.
Swim state update: it wasn't great, she added time in both her events. But her team did come in as runner up in the state which as never been done before! She is very much looking forward to her month long break before the summer season begins.
They had a surprise testing at gym last night. DD rocked it. Coach A even gave her a high five and praise!!! She did an amazing handstand with a good 4 second hold. Coach J (tester) even said WOW. What I noticed the most was Coach J remembered DD's name over the other girls names from the last testing. Hopefully I will be updating with news on Thursday!
My kid is being held back in her circus class because she's got impulsivity issues. She works her butt off to stay focused during the school day and by the time she gets to class, she's a little off the wall. It's fair to note that she doesn't look drastically different from some of the other kids.
Her whole class moved to the next level this session, including a kid who is physically less capable than she is. I know this is because her teacher is frustrated with her. I wish I could tell her that she's actually made her life harder, bc now DD is in a class that she's too advanced for. She's already bored. I can see it.
Blah. I don't want to say anything because ultimately, it's up to them, but man, it's frustrating when people don't understand ADHD.
"Hello babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. On the outside, babies, you've got a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies-"God damn it, you've got to be kind.”
erbear I am sorry, that really stinks for your DD. Have you tried talking to her teacher? Maybe she can try the next level up and see how she does before deciding?

We were in a good place with the teacher she's had for the past 8 months - I talked with her in the beginning about DD's issues and she was very understanding and good with her. This is a different teacher and I haven't talked to her yet because I'm tired of doing it. But I will. Sigh.
