We moved the kids' play room to the basement and our large dining room table into the formal dining room. We now have a wide open room off the kitchen for our informal/ every day eating. The kitchen peninsula is on one side and two other sides are walk ways into a sun room and living room so there isn't a lot of room for a table. I'm having a really hard time finding a smallish table that will seat six. Or five, but all the tables I'm finding seat four or six. DH said it needs to be 56" long x 42" wide or smaller...
Where do you shop for furniture? Any suggestions on a small table that fits six?
Our table is from IKEA. And we didn't even buy it from IKEA - we bought it from Craigslist DH liked it because it's solid wood. It's huge, though. We've also bought furniture from Ballard Designs, Room and Board, and Crate and Barrel.
In this case I would probably put in google "small dining table seats 6" and then click on the shopping tab and scroll through to see what I liked/look at dimensions.
I have a 1950s dining table as my desk - It’s oval and would be perfect for 6. I’ve seen several like it locally - if you are down with the repainted vibe check into that. I love a mix of chairs. Our tables have taken a beating so I would buy used and replace when the kids are bigger. Glue, glue guns, paint, science experiments, sharpie, nail polish remover - just a few of the challenges we have had. I wouldn’t trade a pristine table for all the fun.
For new, our formal is from Z Gallery. I don’t recommend a French polish based on that experience. Our kitchen table is from Haverty’s.

We have an eating area that is a pass-through room between the kitchen and great room. We have a smaller oval table that seats 4 without the leaf and 6 with the leaf. I'll have to check the dimensions when I get home, but it's a good fit for the space. We bought it used from friends of my parents, and I'm guessing it's probably 20-30 years old, and I feel like tables were smaller then than they are now.
We have a small oval-ish table that is meant for 4 but every night except Saturdays we bring in a dining room chair and have it seat 5. Surprising enough, it came from Dillard’s.
Edited to Add: Dillard’s called it a foyer table. Because Texas houses are absurdly large with absurdly large furniture. But it had matching chairs, so obviously in some of the country it was meant to be a kitchen table. Moral of the story is: you may want to leave the kitchen/dining room section.
My parents just got a new dinning set from Costco. What my mom loves about it is that it expands to a large circle with all the leaves but she normally keeps it as a square. If we squeeze and don't put food on the table the square can fit 6. The best is it is bar stool height so we use barstool instead of the giant chairs when we all 6 of us are there for dinner. mellym- most of the time the table comes with 4 chairs, but you can buy 1-2 extra. The only tables that come with 6 chairs are large dining room tables.
mommyatty, I probably need to suck it up and go into a store because most of the online options are sets and don't sell the extra chairs. I can't tell how the fit would look either. We would always have it set with six chairs.
