What’s the best deal to use the London Underground? We’ll be using it daily for the next 8 days to get at least to our hotel and back. It will be our main mode of transportation. We easily navigated this back in 2007 but I feel like something has changed and it seems more complicated.
Very easy. Get a one week pass on the Oyster card (you can get the Oyster card at the airport tube station or at most convenient stores) plus add some cash on it for the 8th day - or you can do as tacokick stated and pre-order one. You can return it at the end of the trip and get your money that you didn't use back.

I used the oyster card for one trip, but a "paper travel card" from a train station for another trip. We were spending two weeks in London, and had some good 2-for-1 vouchers I wanted to use. You could only use the vouchers if you bought your card at a train station. There was one that was about a five minute walk from our room, so it was easy to get. We did have to bring a picture though (same size/style as a passport photo).
Look up 2-for-1 London if you want to see if it might be worth it for you. We used our vouchers on the London Eye, some museums, some restaurants, some walking tours, etc.
