Wow. I'm actually surprised too - I did not expect her to get that long of a sentence. It'll be interesting to see what sentence Sunny gets in December.
Elizabeth Holmes is being sentenced today. She has a toddler now and is pregnant. Defense wants 18 months and served at home. Get put of here with that! I feel compassion for the kids, but she duped so many and put lives at risk.
When was she convicted?
I may be an asshole (probably) but maybe you shouldn’t have kids when you’re probably going to jail. I realize not everyone has the education, means and privilege to plan like that, but she doesn’t fall into that category.
And my second asshole comment of the thread: I wonder if she DID plan on having children in order to try to get out of serving her time in prison.
I really hope she has to serve this sentence. I am very tired of manipulative people just getting away with everything. What is the point of having laws if disrupting them brings no consequences when things go horribly wrong?

Well, she's almost 40. Assuming that she gets 15 or 20 years in prison, her childbearing years will be over after she gets out of prison. So, this was her last chance to have children.
I can’t even formulate a response to this without being even MORE of an asshole than I’ve already been in this thread.
She’s clearly a narcissist that doesn’t think or care about how her choices affect others.

So, I listened to that podcast "The Dropout" about her. I am under the impression that her family thinks really, really highly of its lineage as the descendants of Fleischmann's Yeast. Also, the one hospital is named after her Great Uncle. So, I am under the impression that they placed importance in "continuing the family line."

I was listening to the bonus episode of The Dropout podcast, and from what I understood (which may very well have been wrong, so take this with a grain of salt) is that an appeal is unlikely to affect the length of her sentence, because it was within sentencing guidelines.
This is embarrassing. He is my senator. No. As someone who has to respect patient rights in our state, his support makes me sick. How does he not see that her whole thing was based on breaking laws! Business laws, medical license privileges, ethical violations and many many more. Her pushing forward with Walgreens gave people bad test results!!!
The drop of blood thing was not going to work within the technology they had. The scientific people she had hired told her this, she told them to take a hike. She is a narcissist. So mad that people like the senator think she was just trying to save humanity and should be given a second chance.
I'm not mad about her sentence, although this makes me more mad about our prison industrial complex & how many people we lock up. I don't know what an appropriate punishment would be for her, but having her sit in prison doesn't really seem like it's serving society or as a deterrent to others.
I always feel like (high profile) women tend to bear more of the punishment than men (Martha Stewart)...I feel like I rarely hear men getting really aggressive sentences.

Do you have any data to back this up? Or is this just based on your personal "vibes?"

Even if you feel this way, you’re incorrect. Research shows that Black men definitely get longer prison sentences than others.

Do you mean you rarely hear of high profile, white men getting long sentences? Because statistically, men (more specifically black men) receive the longest prison sentences).

I understood she meant high profile men. Like as a regular person, I hear about all these supposed financially scandalous things mostly wealthy men did but when you ask me to name who went to jail, I can only think of Bernie Madoff, Martha Stewart, Paula Deen, pharma Bro guy, and a handful of others come to mind. I don’t claim to be an expert at all but I’m tired of hearing of how laws have been disrupted and broken but the punishment is basically a fine.

I'll be an asshole with you. I absolutely see this as "they won't send a mother of a young child, much less a PREGNANT mom, to jail!!!". Self preservation.

I agree with both of you and I don't think that makes any of us assholes. Her actions were heinous, people got hurt and she didn't care. it doesn't matter that she has kids. It doesn't matter that other high-profile men may or may not have gotten less harsh punishment. She's guilty and without remorse. She deserves what she got.

I agree. So many things out there pointed to her having an image to uphold depending on the environment. When she was CEO, it was all about the deep voice and the turtlenecks and the black outfits to play into Silicon Valley. Now her image is privileged blonde woman trying to avoid jail time. Having white babies and being pregnant plays right into that.
Resuscitating this thread because of this fluffy, garbage story from the NYT to try to make her look like less of a guilty piece of crap.
She of course played the “I’m a devoted mother!” card for the jillionth time, and journalist Amy Chozik seemed to eat it all up. Amy, Billy, Elizabeth, and the couple’s two children strolled around the San Diego Zoo together, ate Mexican food, and walked Teddy the dog. Elizabeth also breastfed her baby, Invicta (!!!!!), in front of Amy while singing Ace of Base’s “All That She Wants.” She admitted that her deep-voiced, black turtleneck persona wasn’t “authentic,” and she’s since become a changed woman.
Amy Chozik described “Liz” as “authentic and sympathetic,” “gentle and charismatic.” Her editor joked that Amy “got rolled.” Amy disagreed until she spoke with one of Elizabeth’s longtime friends, who claimed that Elizabeth may have started with “genuine intentions” at Theranos but shouldn’t be entirely believed. Um, ya think? But even though this insider basically told Amy got played, her piece was decidedly pro-Elizabeth.
So ironic that she was singing “All that she wants.” The lyrics are basically her. She probably chose the song on purpose, seems like a very calculated thing she would do. Also, Amy is an idiot. She fell right into her trap that a motherly blonde woman with a beautiful white family could possibly have made a teeny mishap in the past. But she has since found her path and authenticity and life is good now.
I can't get through Amy's idiotic article and I can't get over the Ace of Base either LOL. Is she trying to tell us she's pregnant again before heading to jail by singing the "All that she wants is another baby, she's gone tomorrow" line?
