We are planning on going to Peru, flying in and out of Lima in August. We will stay for 2 weeks with a 12 year old and 10 year old. Would love to hear any experiences or suggestions on where to stay.
We did a bit of Peru a few years ago with our 2.5 year old. So we tried to make things as easy as possible. For that reason we stayed at the Hotel Costa Del Sol Wyndham in Lima on the way in and out. It is literally across from the airport. It’s a nice hotel. Nothing special. VERY convenient for the airport, and only the airport.
Then we flew to Cusco. We immediately went to Ollantaytambo. We did this for altitude adjustment. We live at sea level so figured it would be best to ease into the altitude, especially with the toddler. We stayed at the Hotel Pakaritampu. We loved it there. The grounds are beautiful, there’s lamas on the property. It’s a short walk to the train to Macchu Picchu. Not far in a tuk-tuk to town. Olly’s not that big. But there are great restaurants, and ruins to explore right in town basically.
Then we went to Macchu Picchu and stayed at the Belmond Sancuary Lodge for 3 nights. 3 nights was probably overkill, but we were traveling slow. If it’s in your budget the Belmond is awesome. We didn’t spend much time in Aguascalientes it’s bigger, busy and very geared to tourists.
We took the train back to Olly and stayed another night because we liked it so much. Then got a car to Cusco. Honestly I don’t remember much about Cusco. Big church, big square, lots of steep streets. We stayed at the Costa Del Sol. Hotel was in a great location, rooms were fine courtyard area was great for running around in but your kids are old enough to probably not need that.
