DD is 8.5 but still cannot remember lists of things and has never been able to learn a phone number or our address. I have worried before about her getting lost in a crowded place and not being able to give information to people, but as she also has severe separation anxiety and doesn't really go far, we never really did much about it.
Today she was next door at her best friend's house. Their mom doesn't speak English and we haven't ever exchanged phone numbers since we just live next door. But, right at the time DD was supposed to come home, an enormous thunderstorm rolled in. DD started having an anxiety attack and they couldn't contact me. I realize now that any time she is upset she will not be able to communicate with someone.
So I think I she needs an ID bracelet or something. It needs to be something comfortable but also not ugly, because she is particular and wouldn't wear it. Has anyone gotten anything for their child?
I’ve seen Road ID recommended on a Disney special needs group. DD knows my phone number, but I’d say there’s a 0% chance she could recite it if she was upset.

I went with the road ID, and it came today. She is freaking out because instead of reassuring her, it has convinced her that she will get lost and need to use it for help.
I’ve had DD react similarly when I suggest bringing noise-canceling headphones, screaming “No loud noises!” at me. It’s hard to know how to deal with anxiety spirals.

DH and I already had road IDs, so we have taken to wearing them frequently instead of just on runs, to normalize it a bit more. DS wants one too, so that he can be like us. Hopefully that will help some...
