So my boss is gone, I’m taking his place as I’ve mentioend before. So everyone is asking - are you going to move into his office?
The way our office is situated we have a reception area with an admin and a paralegal sitting on two sides. The paralegal sits outside my current office. Then down from my office in a row is my boss’ very large office and then a smaller conference room.
My office is smaller than the conference room by a few square feet bc (seriously) my boss had them move my wall to make his office bigger. His office is the biggest room in our department.
The conference room shared a wall with another department and apparently folks in that other department can sometimes hear our meetings.
The practical side of me is considering turning his office into a conference room and staying where I am so I’m closest to the admins and close to where people come in. My office makes me very accessible.
The politicsl side of me wonders if I should take his office to lay claim to my position/step into his shoes more. Part of me doesn’t want to be in there. It’s huge and feels weird.
Any possibility of someone moving into your office now if you move and if you don't then taking boss's office? If so I would move. Also with your new role do you want to be as accessible? Not sure what it entails but you may need to be somewhat removed.

Some possibility...I’m not sure how high a risk it really is... but yes some possibility. Of course if they wanted to move someone in they could always move me out of his office, which would be more mortifying.
I would just stake the claim. Can you add a meeting table to the office so that it can double up as extra meeting space? All our execs have that and it's nice.
I base my office pics solely on views and windows. I gave one of my team my big windowless office for a smaller office with a window. Was offered another bigger office, but I am only moving again for a bigger window.

Currently I have a wrap around window and more window area than any other room as I'm on the corner, but it's actually not a great feature in that it gets REALLY hot during the summer and cold in the winter.
Cold I could manage but the window is actually hot to the touch.
His office has a window on one wall. I guess it's a bigger window than the conference room because it's a longer wall.
You have to move. Have to. It’s all about the perception.
Plus, you’ll be the GC, right? You need removal from everyone including your admin because you’re going to need the ability to talk about some really private stuff. HR matters are the biggest that come to mind. You need your clients to feel what they are telling you is going into a vault.
