Maybe they should expand Medicaid instead of dabbling in this bullshit.
Preaaaaaacccchhhh.
I read a good article this morning that put into words a lot of how I am feeling. In this country -- and especially these states that are passing these laws -- maternal mortality rates are dismal. A disproportionate amount of the woman who suffer in pregnancy are low-income women because they are unable to get adequate pre/post natal care.
These people who support these laws are more than happy to without even hesitating make women risk their lives -- when in no other circumstances do we make people take any risk to their lives, or even undergo a safe medical procedure they don't want, when if doing so will save another person's life (like donating blood or a kidney or piece of liver). So that is bullshit on it's own. But what makes it even worse is that these people have the power to mitigate the risk through expanding access to health care especially for low income women and they are like "nah."
Let's also remember that we don't mandate deceased organ donation. Corpses and their families get the right to choose. Women do not.
Alabama just put an inmate to death tonight: apne.ws/9reuvbM
Because it is not about pro-life or pro-birth it is about control of women via children, and to a point men who want to step up and be fathers. We know, without a doubt, that the best way to improve outcomes for all, women, children, and men, is to provide excellent reproductive healthcare. It is science, it is social studies, it is public health, but the goal of these people is not what is best for society, it is about them having a maid, a child minder, a secretary, and someone to hand them their burger at the drive through. It has nothing to do with saving lives, only forcing people to end up in circumstances where they can continue to serve them.
Georgia just sentenced the first person to death in 4 years, a woman, only two women have ever had the death penalty enacted. She refused all representation. A big F-U to pro-"lifers" in GA. Keep this BS up, and your going to see a lot more of these kind of cases. As a warning, this case is of horrible abuse, not here to defend this person's actions, but if there were a rating scale of people who "must be killed" for the good of society, there is Ted Bundy and gang members who kill many people, and this woman, for her despicable and unforgivable actions, isn't even close to the same level of threat to society.

This probably isn't the right thread, but it's related, so: what's going on in Maine? Has anyone emerged as a serious D candidate to challenge Susan Collins yet? Because I have never knocked on a door in my life, but the Maine border is 45 minutes away and I will be the door-knockingest mother fucker ever if even a fucking potted plant is running against her. Because fuck you, Susan Collins.
I got a message from a friend who's joined a network of people in access states who are willing to host women in non-access states. I think it's a great and sadly needed thing. But also sadly reminds me of all the underground pages of Hillary supporters on FB because we have to hide who we are and what we stand for.
So now, while abortion foes in many other states are celebrating and feeling empowered by the possibility of the U.S. Supreme Court overturning Roe v. Wade, those in Kansas are working on a constitutional amendment to prevent the undoing of the many measures they’ve put in place.
...
The court’s recent 6-1 ruling means that unless the state constitution is changed, abortion will remain legal in Kansas even if the U.S. Supreme Court should overturn Roe v. Wade, the landmark 1973 decision that guaranteed a right to an abortion. It also means additional scrutiny for abortion restrictions approved by Kansas lawmakers in recent years.

Pennsylvania's House of Representatives passed the Down Syndrome Protection Act, and now it goes to the PA Senate. The governor will surely veto, but it's not clear if the State Congress has enough votes to override the veto.
Elizabeth Warren has a new post up about actions Congress could take. Obviously this requires Senate action, but something for Ds running for Senate to consider.

This is so anger-inducing for me. Trump's supporters make no bones about and lose not one minute of sleep over their views and supporting such a despicable, unethical, misogynistic, racist man.
Yet so many women as you point out felt they had to go underground in their support of Hillary fucking Clinton, still a politician yes but one that would have served this country, the constitution, and the office of the president in at worst not embarrassing way, at best one of the top 3 presidents of our lifetime.

I was coming to add an ETA to this. It's not just about hiding who we are, but it's more about protecting who THESE WOMEN are. Which is even more rage inducing than secret pages because I politically supported someone I viewed as an outstanding, highly qualified candidate.
MO House just passed their bill. Headed to Parson's desk, where it will be signed.
I watched a good portion of the debate this morning and I am so proud of the dem reps - their passion in the face of certain defeat was inspiring. We have some great people trying to represent us - but we need MORE.
Of course I knew this would pass, but the rage I feel right now is STRONG.
I listened to a really good (scary AF) podcast this morning about Operation Save America and their plans to take over government to create theocratic rule. This was recorded in Dec 2017 so it talks about Roy Moore’s senate run. They’ve come a long way on their plan since then. I lived in Flip Benham country for several years so I thought I knew about Operation Save America, but they’ve become more extreme since his heyday. It’s terrifying.
I just started listening to this. This is horrifying and fascinating, thanks for posting this. (When they girl was like "the handmaids dresses were immodest" I was like )

In related Texas news, a bill was passed yesterday to prevent cities from partnering with Planned Parenthood for any services, which will hugely impact care in the state for (particularly low income) people getting tested or treated for STI's, getting HIV treatment, well woman exams, etc. Really shitty.

This is fucking infuriating. Who are they to decide what an individual is and is not willing to do as a parent? Who are they to dictate this decision for families? And if they are going to dictate this, they sure as shit better be willing to offer the monetary care and support that is so often required for children with Down Syndrome. But, of course, they won't.
Down Syndrome is not some benign medical diagnosis. Kids can have serious medical complications and often require long-term care and support. My childhood best friend's sister has DS and her parents are in the process of getting her into a group home with other adults with DS. The parents take turns helping out and there's transportation provided for all of them to get back and forth to their jobs. It's expensive as shit! What about the families who can't afford to do that for their adult children!?

They have no idea what the outcomes for Down Syndrome actually are. Most T21 pregnancies spontaneously abort in 1st trimester. Many more spontaneously abort or go into premature labor in 2nd trimester. Many of the babies born with T21 are not high functioning; even for those who are, it’s quite difficult on their families.
That is not a medical diagnosis I would have terminated for
I don't understand what the point of saying this is. There are people here who have terminated for this medical diagnosis and it's just salt in the very deep wound. Nobody takes that decision lightly and I don't think you can appreciate how difficult a choice it is unless you actually have to make it for your own very real family.

You’re right. I apologize. I shouldn’t have said that.
People are PISSED. And calling for Amy Adams, Haley Bennett, & Glenn Close to quit if he doesn’t move the location after public outcry. I know Stacey Abrams pleaded not to boycott, & I’m not a GA resident so possibly need to chill my outrage: but to me this looks like another rich, white man doing whatever rich, white man wants to do.😢
