TLDR: Keira Marie arrived Tuesday evening, med-free, 10 days overdue. She weighs exactly the same as her brother did and has the same head of dark hair. We are all home now and doing well.
Long induction story ahead: Went to planned induction at 9am on Monday morning. Only 1cm and 50% so no change since OB appt last week. Plan was to start misoprostil and check in 4 hours. No progress in 4 hours so another dose around 2 o'clock. Started to feel some crampy contractions but nothing major. At this point I was majorly regretting coming in and thinking I should have just waited a few more days. At least they let me eat between doses.
Again, no progress at next check so overnight plan changed to place cervadil around 11 and try to get some sleep.
Woke up around 2:30am with contractions and by 4 could no longer doze around them and got up. Labored on ball for many many hours with nurses coming every 20 minutes to repositioned the monitor. Contractions started to ramp up around 10. I couldn't find a comfortable position. Baby must have been in a weird place because I could barely stand and things were really sore in my hips and pubic area even between contractions. I found that kneeling over the ball felt really good but then the nurses rushed in and said baby wasn't tolerating things well anymore and made me get back in bed.
They didn't like what they saw on the monitor so they started pushing fluids and put me on oxygen. That was a scary moment. They started talking about c-section if things didn't resolve quickly. The doc hoped I was pretty far along so they could try and speed up delivery to have her naturally, but I was only at 5cm. So instead I got a drug to slow down the contractions. Which made my heart race and gave me the shakes. So between the IV, oxygen mask, drug and being made to lie on my side it was not a good time. But it worked, gave me and the baby a break, and things went back to what they wanted to see. But they keep periodically applying fluids and oxygen all afternoon.
After that it took a few hours for things to ramp back up to where they were before. Baby must have shifted because now I could stand and felt pretty normal in between contractions. Labored all afternoon with H applying counter pressure to take the edge off. Water still intact so they started talking about breaking it to move things along. Finally around 5pm contractions were super intense but I was only 7cm so decided to break the bag. The nurse was pretty sure things would move quickly after that. Water was broken at 5:48, two contractions and one excruciating push and she was born at 5:56.
So overall a very different experience than the spontaneous labor I had with DS. No pain meds, but no pitocin either. Post delivery I am feeling way better physically than last time. Only minor tearing. DD is nursing like a champ, not like the sleepy eater I had with DS. Adjusting to life as a family of 4.
Congratulations jade! I’m sorry it took so long to get things going but you did so well to have laboured for so long! Best wishes to you and your family!
