Hi. My son got an IEP right at the end of this past school year -- maybe 2-3 weeks at most before the year ended. So there wasn't any time to evaluate how the various strategies and accommodations were working. What should I expect when the new school year starts, in terms of his new teacher? Should I expect that she will already know that he has an IEP and is familiar with it? Should DH and/or I request to meet with her in the first few days/weeks of school to go over it with her and make sure she understands it? Etc. Thanks.
Your teacher will know about the IEP but may not be familiar with the details until a week or two in. I have a intro conversation with my son's teachers the second or third week of school to help them understand his challenges and my expectations. Last year we met in both September and October and by October there were much more comfortable discussing what they were doing and the IEP. Just know that the first 2 weeks of school are insane and even if everything is going perfectly there maybe gaps in IEP related services for a host of reasons.
They should get a copy of the IEP and have reviewed it by a week or 2 into the school year. Ours is led by the hearing itinerant teacher as in she will bring them the FM system and get that set up and they will have a 20 minute consult.
So really the classroom teacher at the beginning of the year with DS should have arranged for his preferential seating and started to implement some of the IEP in terms of teaching methods.
You can certainly meet with the teacher, but I might give it some time to for them to get adjusted and start teaching first. Unless you have day 1 concerns. You might also consider sending an e-mail rather than meeting depending on the content.
One of the popular things to do in my local DS moms group is to create "get to know me" pages with the child's photo, a brief summary of the modifications/accommodations/supports listed in the IEP, and a little bit about the child's dislikes/likes/quirks.
The ones that make them give them to the teachers on "meet the teacher" night - which is a 2 hour event a couple days before the first day of school.

ohgillian, pipsqueak,I love those! I love that they tend to focus on the positives and things about the child you might not know otherwise, but then share how their disability impacts them and how you can help them as the teacher. (Besides implementing the IEP.) Even better if it's created along side the child rather than the parent doing all of it.
