We have SW points and this year I travel free if dh books a flight. Anyhow, we were hoping to go to Costa Rice at Christmas time but everything seems to be booked. I'm so disappointed! I've tried playing around with lots of different dates. We're open to other destinations too but I'm not having any luck. Is there a way on their website to search what airports do have available flights to Costa Rica (or whatever destination)? It makes me put in my departing airport but I want to leave that open because we'd be willing to drive elsewhere to depart.
*I shouldn't say there are no flights-there are some but all of the more economic options are booked so the flights available are $1400+ and we're also taking our kids.
Not really. You can look up where all they fly to and from but other than trying a bunch of options there's not much else. You can put the cities you want and if your dates are flexible use the low fare calendar to see the prices on different dates.
The hard part with CR at Christmas is that is the kick off to their high season. I'd also take a look at possible places to stay to make sure you'd be able to find somewhere affordable before putting in too much work trying to figure out the airfare. When we were looking a few years ago, there was several thousands' dollars worth of difference between Thanksgiving week and mid- to late-December.
I think people snap up the Christmas flights for Southwest as soon as they're released. Even then, they're still pretty high because of demand. I looked at flights to Puerto Rico around then the day they came out and both points and dollars were more than three times the normal.

Christmas/Thanksgiving flights on Southwest have been out for 6 weeks or so and they sell out really, really fast. We are heading to Belize around thanksgiving and the flights have been sold out for weeks. We always buy Christmas/Thanksgiving flights the day they are released.
