I have These foam rockets on my wishlist for DS1. I feel like it’s going to be my new go-to bday present but we haven’t bought one yet so I can’t speak from experience.

You can’t go wrong with lego but I feel like everyone buys lego.

I’ve gotten great feedback on How to Build Paper Airplane books for that age. I can’t find the specific one we gave, but there are a bunch.

Lego is really popular. My 8 year old liked painting stuff and he got a some outdoor toys that were nice. A stomp rocket is usually really popular with kids. I've given books sets to kids I don't know that well. I've also done a movie gift card.
