SO GLAD we got E1's tonsils out this morning. Like 5 weeks ago they were 3+/4. Today, they were not just touching, but pressed up against each other. And infected (why doesn't this kid ever show signs that he is sick?). They're HUGE. The surgeon and anesthesiologist both said they weren't sure how he was breathing.
And the anesthesiologist is the same one who did my epidural last spring. He is my absolute favorite to work with so that made this nurse mama's heart happy. I knew I could trust him.
We're in recovery right now, waiting on him to wake up.
My almost 8 year old is getting his tonsils and adenoids out in 5 weeks. I’m hoping it helps him breathe better. I hear the recovery can be rough and I’m dreading that a little. I hope your kid has an easy recovery!
Well crap. Now he has a fever of 102. We were told to call for fever of 102+ so now I've got a message with the answering service and waiting on a call back.
On call doc called back in a few minutes. Told us to try conservative fever management first (cool bath), then ibuprofen if that didn't work. Try to get temp down to 100-101.
Tried both, didn't go down. E1 is now asleep and I checked again about 20 minutes ago, and it is 103.4. He gets another dose of his pain medicine (hycet, so like the kid version of vicodin) in 30 minutes and I'm hoping the tylenol in that helps. I'm calling on call again if it hits 104.
Thanks. He hasn't, really. Low grade fever all day and although he's been sipping fluids (he will only take gatorade and propel), he hasn't peed since he woke up. He will not even try pedialyte popsicles. I talked to his surgeon, and he said to try as hard as possible to get the equivalent of another bottle of gatorade down before bed. If he starts to refuse pain meds or hasn't peed by morning, take him in for IV fluids.

Ugh. Any chance he's nauseous? Maybe some dissolvable zofran would help?
The one time we've had an issue with dehydration it was because DS1 had a raging double ear infection that was causing him to feel nauseous.
I'm sorry. That's frustrating and not fun to deal with.

He says he's not nauseous (and he did get nauseated overnight, and we gave him zofran at 3). He says it's because his throat hurts. I keep telling him that keeping his throat wet and the cold from the popsicles will help.

We found it to be a really hard recovery. Lots of tears by him and me. Somewhere around day 7 he turned the corner I think. You can also give Motrin. Hang in there.
I just had my tonsils out (much harder as an almost-40 adult). Day 3 was by far the hardest with pain management due to the healing process. Make sure you are overlapping the ibuprofen and Tylenol if you aren’t still on Rx pain meds. Set timers and do not miss a dose.
I found that flavored waters (no carbonation) like “Fruit2O” and Nestle’s Splash felt colder and tasted better than regular water. I drank more of those than plain water.
Oh I've got a timer set to go off every 4 hours for his pain med (which is the Rx kid version of norco), even overnight. He hates it and it is a struggle to give it every time but we're staying on top of it. I've given him ibuprofen a couple times for breakthrough pain. I'm about to doctor his clear drinks with miralax though, since he tends to be constipated.
He is much better this morning. He peed before bed, drank a whole cup of water throughout the night. Ate a few bites of runny fried egg this morning and is drinking Gatorade and pediasure. And currently eating jello. And while I haven't checked his temperature (the thermometer is being a butthole) he is definitely cooler to touch.
