Hi ladies. I just started running again (C25K) after a very (25ish year) hiatus. I bought new running shoes that are actually rated highly to help with shin splints, (though I didn’t know it at the time). I had shin splints way back in the day, and while the discomfort I am having now isn’t nearly as bad, I’m wondering what kind of shin discomfort is typical soreness as a new middle aged runner and what warrants taking the shoes back and trouble shooting other solutions (the running store has a 30-day return policy)? The pain isn’t sharp but I feel it while running and my shins are more sensitive and almost feel bruised in spots in between runs.
I had chronic shin splints for many years. For me it was less about the shoes and more about my gait and mechanics. The two main things that helped me were a religious hip/glute strength workout, and running to a cadence metronome. I use a free app- MetroTimer. I increased my cadence by 2 until I reached 175. So you know your baseline cadence by any chance? (My garmin recorded mine and it averaged 164.)
I also wear compression sleeves.
I did a lot of targeted PT, had a video running analysis, dry needling, scraping, and running on an alterG treadmill but the things I listed above did the most for me. Good luck and let me know if you have anymore questions!

I had a lot of trouble with shin splints when I first started running too. They stopped on their own eventually. I found that compression sleeves and massaging or rolling either side of my shin bones really helped a lot.
