Is there anything nearby that I can do in that time frame? I've never been and my mom, sister, and I have a long layover there on our way home from Edinburgh. We've been round and round and can't make the flights work any other way so we are stuck with it.

We had an 8 hour layover and left the airport and went to Windsor. We left our checked bags at the airport (we each had a backpack as a carryon which we took with us) and pre-arranged a car service to take us there and back. We took a tour of Windsor castle and had a quick lunch before returning to the airport. I think the other option we were considering was a Harry Potter studio tour.
I think I read online that you should only consider that as an option with a 6+ hour layover. It worked really well for us and we were back at the airport an hour before our next flight (which was within Europe).

No advice but make sure to leave a LOT of time to get back. We have always needed at least 3 hours to get through Heathrow so you are really looking at maybe 2-3 hours to do something. Heathrow is an awful airport.

(But hurray! Edinburgh! Welcome!)
Thanks! Can't wait to be back. This is my third trip there but their first one. They're expecting me to know everything 😬😬.
