Craft kits - like making jewelry, making scented lotions, painting rocks, etc. Money or gift cards, like target or the movie theater. Clothing accessories if there’s something she needs, even if she’s not into clothes, like a hat or a purse. We went to a 9 year old girl’s bday yesterday. DS said she liked LOL dolls last year but we got her a gift card because this is definitely the age where they can suddenly have no interest in toys. DS loves Pokémon but he hasn’t even opened up all the toys he got for his bday in May.
I’m a big fan of things that are big on movement and balance though...
They both also want some sort of MP3 player that just plays music with earbuds too. Like that’s a big freaking deal. Not iPod level, but Sony has a nice one and there are tons of no name brands as well.

My 8 year old dd is asking for a Gizmo watch for Christmas since her brother got one and she is insanely jealous. That is what she wanted for her birthday, but she only told me that like a week before her birthday and they weren't on sale and I had already spent $$ on Lion King tickets (to the broadway musical), so it got bumped to Christmas. The only other thing she had asked for for her birthday was a specific pair of shoes.

Painting supplies - canvas, brushes, paints etc, making slime (this goes in phases), Harry Potter LEGO, anything from Justice or Claire’s, electric razor scooter.
Ditto experience gifts. Broadway shows (touring productions) have been a big hit.
best gift ever!!
We are very lucky and my mom gets season tickets for the three of us every year. We all love it! My mom and I have been going for over 20 years. We just started including DD this year. She's super excited to see Newsies and Hamilton next summer.

My daughter turned 9 this weekend. When people asked, I was completely honest and said xbox gift cards. Everyone was like "oh, so is cash cool?" Yup, 100% cool. She got some higher priced items from grandparents and godparents (gymnastics mats, floor beam, gaming chair). Besides that, a bath bomb or something small with cash or a card. We don't really run with a crowd that's anti-gift card. It is actually a relief!
FWIW, I also always GIVE cash for bdays these days. I keep these on hand and stick a $20 in it.
