This is the most WTF story I have ever read. So is she a child? Did the mom lie so she could abandon her? Shouldn't the doctors be able to figure this out. WTF
ETA: I read another article that said she was adopted from an American couple. So I think this is party of a shady rehoming situation too. I wonder if they can even track down the original Ukrainian adoption
This story is so bizarre. I know from my line of work, there is a big difference in the dental development of an 11 year old versus 22 year old's teeth. What is going on with the court system?

Right? I mean I think it would be somewhat easy to figure out at least some of her age re: her teeth. And it doesn't seem like it be that easy to change a birth certificate from 11 to age 22? So I imagine they had a lot of proof.
I want to hear from the people who gave her up initially. Is this why they gave her up? They determined something was really off and wanted to just get rid of her?
And surely they can determine how old she is. This really shouldn't be that difficult, right? They figure out general age ranges for murder victims, don't they? I don't think that's just a tv thing. There's a big damn difference between an under 10yo child and an adult!
My husband refuses to read about it or talk to me about it and it’s driving me mad. Especially because the girl was allegedly left in Lafayette (we went to college at Purdue in West Lala).
One article I read said she was in the adult school in Lafayette after she was set up in the apartment in 2012/2013.

And why charge the parents now? So many years later.

And they don’t have the woman/girl in question as far as I know? She’s apparently missing!

if she does actually have the bone disorder that they are saying she has, i can imagine that makes it far more difficult to do the age tests.
i remember from a previous life being tangentially involved with the bone density tests to determine a child/teenager's age. i have to imagine that having a disorder would make it FAR more difficult to figure out.

Also, am i understanding correctly, these people never met her before they took her into their care and did a quickie adoption? That is such a terrible way to go about a lifelong commitment like adopting a kid.

This is where I am. I get that they wouldn't want to go public, but would there not be an adoption trail, when they gave her up for second family adoption? I only know of one family who did that. The child they adopted, and then gave up for second family adoption, had a very, very long health care record, as I would presume this child would have, as well. They would be easy to track down, unless they were trying very hard to hide.

And they didn’t ask the previous adoptive parents why they gave the child up. I don’t know. I kind of get wanting it to not be about the child’s issues, but isn’t it just due diligence to determine what the child’s struggles are so that you can be prepared to meet them?

She's not missing, I found her on FB in two seconds. I am struggling to believe that ALL the reports here didn't do their due diligence interviewing her and the other couple who attempted to take legal guardianship of her, because they were all easily searchable.

So is she in the Lafayette area? It’s the Lafayette/Tippecanoe County people pursuing right?

I feel bad for the girl. I think the mom is sociopathic, and the dad went along with it. I think they probably adopted her to make themselves look better (aka "look we have a daughter with other significant medical needs!") to pad the "look how we nurtured our child with autism!" angle. It didn't go how the parents (and I use the term loosely here) wanted, and so they dumped her. It reminds me a lot of Meghan Heimer/Redshaw who endangers public health. She couldn't handle the children she adopted (again I use the term loosely here) and eventually essentially abandoned them.
This story is utterly bizzarre, largely because there are so many facts missing from all of the media's reports on it. I really have a hard time imagining that the court agreed to legally change her age without some really compeling evidence that she was actually older than claimed.
If it's true that she was already being investigated by immigration authorities for age fraud before the adoption, that's also a pretty big red flag for me. How strange.
How in the world do people adopt a child without even asking questions like what were the behavior concerns and when did she immigrate from Ukraine?

I read on reddit she is living with the family that tried to adopt her (that the Barnett's prevented from adopting) and that she seems happy and clearly seems like a kid (growing into a teen) but I am not good at the FB searching.
1. This story is fucking CRAAAAZZZZZZZZY! 2. It took me all day to remember who the president was in the slogan "Tippecanoe and _____, too!" It's Tyler. Just in case you were also wondering.

I don't know, I mean if she really was 9 it doesn't make sense. They just got her an apt? How did she even survive? When did the other family find her? Why didn't someone at the apt call the police?

This is where I am. I absolutely think the parents abandoned her and she was a kid.
This story is somewhat local to me and I've been following it. I just realized from the article you posted that I have more knowledge of these people than I thought. I worked at the university that there son attended at a child. He was insanely smart but mom was a whackadoodle from the stories I heard from those with 1st hand knowledge. She certainly wasn't doing this kid (son) any help to challenge areas that he didn't excel in.
I think they moved to Canada for him to do a PhD program.
Small world.
I would think doctors could accurately assess this young woman's age.

Yeah, the mom saying she didn't ask "out of compassion" for the previous parents came across as sanctimonious. Like okay you want to be a "good Christian" or whatever but have some common sense. There is something seriously off with both the parents and the daughter here.
