I've been trying to look into news. I used to live in S CA. From the map it doesn't seem a big deal. From the news it's almost absent. I know that's not likely a true representation. So, what's going on that isn't getting a good enough wider audience?

One person has died from a heart attack, being attributed to the fire (the stress of evacuating maybe?), and around 30 buildings have burned in Porter Ranch, Sylmar, and Granada Hills. The fire is near very populated areas like Chatsworth and they’re wanting to keep it from spreading south. There are about 100k people evacuated right now and the fire’s only 13% contained. The winds have really died down this afternoon, but it’s definitely still breezy in the area. I’m hoping the lull in the large gusts will make it easier to contain the fire, but it’s still super dry and warm.

There are at least 6 wildfires burning in Southern California.
The largest and fastest moving is the Saddleridge fire in the San Fernando valley which started after 9pm Thursday. By 3:30pm Friday it had spread to 7,500 acres and was 13% contained. (I can't find anything more recent - probably since they are focusing on the fires, not publicity - especially since it's been moving so fast to track). At one point, it was spreading at a rate of 800 acres an hour. At least 31 buildings had burned and 100K people are evacuated.
The Sandalwood fire went through a Calimesa mobile home park burning 76 homes and killing one elderly resident.

DH was called in early Friday morning to report to give his station full coverage - LA, Riverside, and OC counties were max staffed for the Santa Ana weather event. Two engines from his station are at Saddleridge. Porter Ranch cannot catch a break (they had the largest natural gas leak in the US a few years ago).
I agree with Sonrisa, LA Times has the best fire coverage for the area: www.latimes.com/

Thanks for the details. I had thought I was on LA Times, but now I don't remember. It was a map that showed 2 fires, and they were 50% and 75% contained. It's entirely possible I saw an older cached map.
