The event planners from k3am’s DH’s former employer have apparently moved to Texas and joined our school’s annual fund committee. So the normal rhythm is one year is a gala with gowns and fancy-ness. The next year is a theme. Last year was theme year, and it was Roaring 20s. Easy and fun. This year should be the gala year. The invitation calls it a gala, but the dress is “chic safari” and the event is at the zoo. Now, I have been to our annual Zoo Ball, which is an out and out gala. Like old money, updos, long gowns, and gloves GALA. So the zoo doesn’t mean “not a gala”. But I asked the actual freaking chair of the committee, and she said she doesn’t really know but she feels like people are not going full-on gala. She sent me her Pinterest board, and it’s all animal print or jungle print and khaki suits for her husband.
So... dress me. I’m 5’10, hour glass, with 34E boobs and broad hips. Generally about a size 12 in regular clothes. Bigger in fancy clothes because they don’t vanity size.

Oh god. I would die of my husband wore a khaki suit. A museum here used to have a gala in caveman theme and people generally themed with accessories. So that may be, like, a tea-length black gown with animal print pumps or something.
Our school did a themed gala last year after never having a theme before. We just didn’t go mostly because I just didn’t know what to wear. Apparently attendance was down like 30% last year and they don’t know why. 🤷♀️
So my answer is just don’t go this year. Probably the wrong answer. I’d probably just do themed accessories and call it good.

DH is kind of a total chick about getting dressed up. So he’s pretty much, “F you if I don’t get to wear my tux. I’m staying home.”

I can send my DH in your place since they're twinsies. DH can even bring his own tux for the occasion.

This is where I ended up with DH's local themed parties (ie: the holiday parties). For the summer soiree, they were a comped weekend away at a really nice resort.. that part was enough for me to not care about the awful theme as much.
For some reason "chic safari" makes me think of something involving palm fronds more than animal print. If you google "palm frond jumpsuit" or "palm frond dress" there are a lot of images that come up.
