Ours is pretty simple - and small. Just six of us after one year when my sister came and started a fight that was like something from the movies.
Anyway -
appetizers are usually a take on welsh rarebit (our version is lump crab on buttered English muffin with melted cheese on top)
fried turkey green beans sauteed with garlic and butter My mom makes homemade cranberry sauce but she's the only one who eats it Homemade rolls (also my mom) Mashed potatoes Salad oyster dressing
I'll make an apple tart for dessert
For Christmas Eve, we do shrimp and grits and then a breakfast casserole for Christmas morning.
We’re hosting thanksgiving this year, 12 adults, 4 kids. Here’s the menu so far, still looking for ideas:
Cheese board for app
Fried turkey Smoked turkey breast Sausage stuffing Mashed potatoes Brussel sprouts with bacon Creamed onions Garlic green beans Corn pudding Cloverleaf rolls Some squash dish? Salad?
Apple cranberry crisp Thinking of trying pumpkin prailine pie Instant pot cheesecake- flavor tbd
I recently made a delicious salad with roasted acorn squash and figs with prosciutto and arugula. You probably won't be able to find fresh figs, so maybe add mushrooms instead?
Thanks! I saw fresh figs at the farmers market last week, I’ll have to check again.
Unrelated, but randomly I made your instant pot short ribs tonight, they were great! Everyone loved them. Just happened to be one of the first results, and was what I was looking for.

We aren’t near family and don’t have friends yet so we are ordering thanksgiving dinner through Harris teeter or Cracker Barrel. Im excited for it to be stress free.
Edit to add we will make grandma nuggets Mac and cheese though!

Ooh, they are delicious. I need to make them again soon.
Another side dish that's super easy and I used to make all the time is to cook couscous in half water, half apple juice, add a bit of cinnamon or pie spice. Stir in some dried fruit (apples work great, but so do craisins or golden raisins) at the end, plus nuts of your choice. It takes less than 10 minutes, it's seasonal, it's really tasty.
I'm in charge of green bean casserole this year, as well as pickle rollups. Minnesota sushi.
We usually do turkey, mashed potatoes, gravy, crudites (or simply, veggie tray lol), stuffing, said green bean casserole, biscuits/bread, cranberry sauce, and several desserts and pies. Pretty basic.
My aunt is in a nursing home so we are bringing Thanksgiving to her. We rented out a meeting space, bringing everything there, craft/activity table for the kids, football on tv. Very casual.
The only thing my aunt specifically asked me to bring for Thanksgiving is stuffed dates.
I thought I’d also make a dessert platter with bite size treats - brownies, cookies, strawberries, maybe lemon squares or even macarons (I bought the almond flour a while ago and got too lazy to attempt them), Trader Joe’s flyer has chocolates shaped like turkeys ...
Now I’m wondering if that’s a good idea. I feel like everyone always brings a dessert so maybe it’s too much? And my mom said she’s bringing that giant $20 Costco sheet cake. But there are 20 people coming, apparently, and maybe little bites are good so people can just take samples?
Maybe I should contact her and ask if I should just bring a pack of Tupperware for doggy bags instead, lol.

I know people go wild over Costco cake, bit I don't get it, especially for Thanksgiving. If Costco sheet cake was the only choice at Thanksgiving I would be so annoyed.

I’m sure there will be more desserts. I also told my mom it’s probably a huge waste to buy such a large cake since I imagine most people won’t want a big slice of sheet cake for Thanksgiving dessert. Also it’s a giant cake and there’s going to be no room to put it. I suggested she get one of the smaller layer cakes or another dessert at Costco but she’s got the sheet cake idea in her head so there’s no talking her out of it. She’s convinced people will take a bunch home.

At least it’s just $20?
The chocolate layer cake is so good though...though also kinda huge honestly.

I really like that long horizontal tuxedo cake, but MH and I stopped getting it because the last couple times we had it it was following some really awful personal situations. So now we call it “the sad cake,” lol.
I think our family has decided not to do turkey this year and to do roast beef instead. Turkey’s great the first day, but no one eats enough leftovers to make it worth it.
For once, though, my in-laws have actually requested certain dishes. They’ve come almost every Thanksgiving for the last eight years and every year, I ask if there’s anything in particular they want.
I guess last year I finally made a couple of things that impressed them enough

I just watched all the bon appetit making perfect thanksgiving videos on YouTube. They’re not only delightful I got so many great ideas and insights. I love when publications handle the trial and error for the reader.

I have to make this for every holiday or my nephews are CRUSHED now 😋
Anyone have any crowd friendly desserts other than pumpkin or apple pie? I'm getting a little bored with my usual rotation.
I get a lot of compliments when I make chocolate sheet cake (Ina Garten “Beatty’s chocolate cake” recipe, with store bought icing) and tres leches cake (Pioneer Woman recipe).
How about cheesecake?
Or stick with pie but do something like peanut butter pie or a chocolate cream pie.
I have most of my meal planned. My in-laws and parents, and several of our siblings are coming over, we'll have around 18. I'm taking care of the mains and farming out apps and deserts.
Do you use msg in your gravy? I’ve never used it, I suppose I have a bad association with it from all the Chinese menus decrying use of msg. But the Bon Appétit folks raved about it.

I never have, but I have some in my amazon cart. Rationally, I know it’s fine in normal doses, but I have never purchased or used it before. This might be the year.
