I have no idea for my father in law. He is mostly retired, has no hobbies or interests other than movies and watching tv. We've already given them netflix and a nicer tv. We generally get him movie gift cards for every occassion, but lately I think he's even stopped going to the movies (prefers watching at home). They don't drink alcohol, don't enjoy eating out. Don't travel. Don't want anything technology related. We are stumped.
Does you dad like a certain kind of sweet? My parents do not need anything and buy whatever interests them so it’s hard shopping for them. I normally just get something small. My dad loves licorice. I try to find a random salty gross (to me!) variety and gift that with maybe $10 of scratch lotto tickets. Always a hit. They mostly love seeing the grandkids
My dad has gotten super easy, but also super boring, since my mom died. He's getting housewares, the sort of stuff she would have bought and he does not think to buy for himself: new bedding for his bed (I have had to mend his existing comforter twice this year), new dish towels for the kitchen, and new cake and pie carriers because his are falling apart, framed pics of the kids, and tickets to Star Wars Ep 9.
My dad lives in Maine and has a custom woodworking studio on the back of his property. I got him a large square fabric basket in a red buffalo plaid print. So random, but definitely something he will actually use. It’s his style and it’s useful.
I picked up a weather station for my dad at Costco today. It has a rain gauge, wind speed, humidity, temp, etc. Given he likes to provide updates every degree change it seemed like something he would enjoy 😂
My dad is impossible. He doesn’t even feign excitement over gifts. “Oh great, another sweater. Just what I need.”
One year I tracked down a copy of the ships log that has his immigration crossing info (his name along with his siblings and parents and ship info) from Ancestry along with a small painting of the ship and had it framed. It was the only time in my 38 years of life he showed any emotion over a gift. I have been chasing that high ever since lol.
I got my dad a GC to a golf simulator place so he can play in the New England winter. Also a new puzzle. And now that someone mentioned a storm glass, he might be getting that too. So thanks for that!

We got him one for a place in MA last year, and now there is one close to his friend's house in RI, so we got him one for there this year. There is a TopGolf supposedly coming pretty close to my parents' house, and I cannot wait.
My dad is the worst to shop for, so I went the easy route and did a calendar of my kid, good chocolate, and an iTunes gift card since he likes to buy tv shows to binge
I used to order Nueske’s gift baskets (bacon, cheese, liverwurst, etc) for my dad. I also bought him some concert tickets so he and my mom could go out.
My FIL was also impossible to shop for - retired for health reasons, zero social activities, never went out other than to go to the grocery store or maybe fishing once in a while. MH bought him a lot of throw blankets, slippers, new clothes, basic clothing staples like socks, grocery gift cards, caps, and Western DVDs.
