My 8 YO doesn't really love to read. She does like joke, riddle books. I'm wondering if there is a book that maybe has short, funny stories? Something where we could read a story a night? We do chapter books (she likes Mrs. Piggle Wiggle, and similarly each chapter is a little story)
My DD loves the Bad Guys books. Not short enough for one book a night, but easily a few chapters can be read in a short period of time. (They are about traditionally "bad" animals that are trying to be good. Some potty humor but it's not horrible through the first few books at least.)
She also likes Mercy Watson because they are goofy. What about Owl Diaries? She also likes How to Catch books (Elf, Mermaid, Unicorn). And the Gingerbread on the Loose series.
The scholastic branches books are really great. DD enjoyed them when she first moved to chapter books some of her favorites were Owl Diaries, Time Jumpers, Dragon Masters, and Magic School Bus. They run about 80 pages with colored pictures and large font. She might also enjoy the graphic novels but I have no suggestion.
Bink and Gollie? My kiddo can't read yet so I haven't viewed then through that lens but they otherwise qualify. Same author as Mercy Watson. Each book has three stories.
Tagging you all- just wanted to say THANK YOU! I bought nearly all these books and they have been total hits. She's reading Classroom 13 for the second time, which she has never done and is so proud of herself! So thank you very much for all these recs.

The books my kids loved that were similar to Wayside school in humor are the 13 story treehouse series, the notebook of doom books, and Diary of a wimpy kid books. They are all easy chapter books but my ds keeps reading them over and over again.
