katiecj6, I’m sorry you are struggling but it is good that you actually recognize what’s going on. Cross addiction is pretty common. This board is pretty dead so you may not get a lot of support here unfortunately. I would recommend checking out Www.Soberrecovery.com you will find lots of support there on their forums. Have you thought about finding a counselor with a CAC certification (addiction specialist)? Most people are self medicating mental health issues (which can be as simple as social anxiety or really complex) so counseling would be really important if you want to address your drinking. AA would also not hurt to check out. Alcoholism is a progressive disease unfortunately so it is likely to get worse but no one can predict how soon. Number one step is to admit you have a problem and it sound like you are there. Don’t be afraid to seek help. I was married to an alcoholic and yes it will eventually affect relationships unfortunately. I have found that website to be a great resource both for addicts and family of addicts. You won’t feel so alone knowing that others have gone through the same same thing and that you are not the only one. I strongly recommend individual counseling as well. It is important that you quit for yourself though and not just not to lose your boyfriend (not saying you are necessarily but people that quit for others are not usually successful long term ). I wish you lots of strength!
katiecj6 - I just want you to know you're not alone. I've been struggling with alcohol/drug addiction for years. I am also considered a "dual diagnosis" and "comorbid" patient...so, yeah. I've used alcohol for a long time to cope with what goes on in my head. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy has helped the most (for me).
Shreddingbetty has given you some great advice, and I'll also vouch for soberrecovery.com. I've found a lot of help there myself (even though I don't actively participate).
I hope you find some peace with yourself this holiday season. I mostly lurk on these boards now, but I'm around if you want to tag/pm me.
