Hi guys, I realize this is probably a longshot, but there doesn't seem to be an active local board for Houston. Is anyone familiar with any retirement communities in the Houston area? I mentioned before, my parents are divorcing after 50 years of marriage, and I'm trying to help my mom get settled. She is very sharp and mobile for her age (80) but would like to find a place with greater levels of care if assisted living / memory care / nursing support is needed in the future. Her biggest priority is finding a place with activities where she will be able to make friends. Finances should not be a concern once everything gets sorted out. DMs are welcome. I've been researching online but I'm across the country, and most of the info seems to be sponsored ads in one way or another.
We also used A Place for Mom to help us get started to find out what worked best for my mom. She ended up at an Atria property. She really liked it(except sometimes the food -- but she just was picky alot). There are some Atria properties in Houston. www.atriaseniorliving.com/
She really loved all of the social aspects. They had activities both in house and field trips to various places. She made some good friends.
They assign you a counselor. It is only the one person that will call and ask about what your needs are. She was pretty helpful for us and not pushy. I did not get calls from a jillion retirement places.
We moved my grandmother into one a year ago. My mom toured all of the options in our area (northeast Houston) that fit our criteria.
We liked the ones that were a bit smaller better. They seem more personal. The other one we considered had larger rooms/apartments but was honestly a little chaotic, IMO, since their dining room is the main room in the shared spaces and they have 3x as many residents. The place we chose is smaller and calmer but very nice. I tried to convince my mom to move her years ago (grandma is 90) and I think she would be happier now if she’d moved in at least 5 years ago but she is happy and likes it. Her place is owned by a larger company; I’ll look up what it is and PM you. We have been very happy with the management. They plan lots of good activities and are very responsive. My grandmother’s ac went out in the middle of the night and they immediately had portable units in her unit so she could sleep comfortably then replaced the ac during the day.
If you aren’t already, be sure you are searching “independent living.”
