DS's favorites include: a tunnel from IKEA, a set of plastic beach toys, and clothes (but for the love of God ask a parent what size so they don't have to run all over town exchanging shorts for shorts that will fit this summer).

Target has a small water table for $30 right now, and we live for that thing (hot climate, outside all the time)
Clothes is another good suggestion. Maybe a quiet time toy (puzzles, books, those big fat crayons and a coloring book)
Ds got so much crap for his first birthday that lights up and makes noise. The gifts I appreciated the most: books, wooden blocks, a fuzzy homemade blanket.
I would do books or puzzles. If you want to get a toy, go with little people. DS has a ton of little people and still plays with them pretty much every day. He really loves his little people bat cave and the wheelies bat cave.
I love when DS gets cash (we put it in his savings) or target gift cards (use for clothes and diapers, or I will sometimes let him pick a movie), less stuff for me to have to finds a place for.
