So, last I posted, our sellers were waiting for building regulations to be passed on the house they were buying as well as a special new build guarantee. Everything has ended up working out in terms of the house stuff WE were waiting for.
The seller got the building regs on that house but did not get the new build guarantee because someone from the building company fucked things up. Ugh. But they found someone who would do a guarantee as long as they got a building inspection done. So, the sellers have found a surveyor and they are hoping to get the survey done this week or early next week at the latest. Once everything is found to be satisfactory (oh, please be satisfactory), then the guarantee (10 yr) would be given. Once this is done, both the sellers and us will be able to exchange contracts and then we'll be able to finalise everything a week or two later.
The hoped for timeline is that we'll be exchanging contracts by the end of the month and completing the sale a week later. That would give us time to get it cleaned, get new carpet put in, etc before we the end of our current contract (22 Feb). We're crossing our fingers.
The worst case scenario is that this all goes to hell because the builders were super shady and did everything wrong and so the sellers don't end up buying the house and pull out of the sale and then we move into a long-term rental. It's unlikely to happen.
So, I guess, some good news but being cautious about being optimistic due to everything else that has gone wrong in this transaction.
Crossing everything for you! The ordeal of buying/selling in the UK is both fascinating and frustrating from your posts.
I find it especially curious given how many American legal/financial structures are based on their UK counterparts. I'm curious when/where/why we diverged so radically. I have friends in Canada and I'm going to see if they're closer to US or UK processes.
I can't remember all that you said that the sellers wanted to take but some of it seemed odd. Are they still trying to pull that nonsense or are they going to leave them since it's been such a shit show?
mrsukyankee, fingers crossed! You've handled this situation with such grace. It's been such an awful journey! I never dreamed it would be so difficult.

Hahaha...my hockey team and my husband would disagree with the grace statement (I've had some serious hissy fits during my more anxious times). But thanks.

I think most people would have more than a few hissy fits going through this process.

I have had my share of house related hissy fits lately, and our situation is just one room, not having to move whole houses and everything else that you've been through, so color me impressed.

Canada is much closer to US processes. Thank goodness!

I have no idea. This part of the idiocy is not their fault. I'm not angry with them about this going wrong. But, we may ask that they at least include the two items we were going to buy from them (fridge and a light). They may also not have the time to sell the items that they would normally sell due to the fact that we're going to have them move quickly between contract signing and final sale (normally 2 weeks, we're going to push for one week now).
Wallflower, the Scots are also much better with this process. I don't know it as I haven't lived it, but every Scot I know who has purchased in London hates doing it here a lot more.
