We have a credit union that is back east and i keep a local bank for my fun money and for us to get cash out etc. My current "local" bank is a Credit Union that is in CA and since we moved we've had to either incur charges at local ATMs or get money out at grocery stores. So, driving around I've noticed several Chase bank locations so i figured that might be a good option for us, but would like some personal opinions. Do they have crazy charges for low balances etc?
I worked for Chase for 10+ years, and still bank with them. Direct deposit keeps the account free and you can't beat their fraud monitoring and mobile/online/technology services. I do however do all my lending/saving at my credit union because the rates are just much better.

One nice thing about Chase (H uses it for his checking account) is that you get a certain number of fee-waived international withdrawals when you use an ATM abroad. It’s a great perk.

This is good to know!
Like OP I've been using an out of state credit union for my primary bank, and was thinking of switching to Chase. One of the only times I pay to withdraw from an ATM is on vacation, so having fees waived would be awesome.
I've been with Chase since I was 16 (so 24 years) and I had DD open a student account when she was 16. I've had fraud on my account once and they caught it really quick and fixed it. I love that I can bank from my phone.
We did this, but ultimately closed our account. We love Credit Unions so much and 99% of banks can't compare. We just didn't have enough in the account to warrant keeping it open.
ATMs are hard, but I was lucky to find a Wintrust one that doesn't charge (Different name bank), and I go weekly for work, so it is super convenient. But we've lived here 10 years, and I didn't realize it was there for about 7 of them, plus I don't think it was Wintrust the whole time anyway.

This is probably based on which type of account you have. I don't think all of them get those fee waivers.

Ive been with Chase since they took over Washington Mutual. My only issue with them is that their fraud department is too on the ball at times. They don't like it when I go shopping at Harrods and if I buy something out of the norm, I get an "is this you making the charge" email from them.
ETA- some of their ATMs have started distributing bills other than $20s. I LOVE this option because sometimes you dont need $40 or $60 so its nice to be able to take out odd dollar amounts or even get $100 in assorted bills. My local Chase ATM distributes $5, $20 and $100 bills.
I have had Chase since they bought out my local bank in Chicago maybe 14 years ago. I have never had any issues and would highly recommend them. I have most of my credit cards through them and its so easy to make payments and transfer funds. My prior mortgages have been through brokers and always got sold. The last time it was actually sold to Chase and I love it so much I almost want to refi directly through them. I have had savings accounts and other accounts with different banks but Chase’s online portal and app portal have been my favorite and easiest to use so far.
I've been with Chase ever since First Chicago became Chase, a long time ago. I have been very happy with them. I'm bummed because I recently moved and they don't have Chase here so I need to find a different bank.

I won’t need the $15k requirement because this is just my fun money account but if I can the $300 I’d be stoked! Thank you!

Ah, Ok. Would you meet the Checking Account minimums to avoid fees? If not, it might be better to find a local credit union that doesn't have fees or have lower minimums.
Chase Total Checking: $12 Monthly Service Fee OR $0 with one of the following each monthly statement period:
Direct deposit totaling $500 or more made to this account per month,
OR a balance at the beginning of each day of $1,500 or more in this account,
OR an average beginning day balance of $5,000 or more in any combination of this account and linked qualifying Chase checking, savings, and other balances

The above is actually why we closed out our Chase account. We had shifted our main banking to a great credit union that pays good interest on our checking account and also on our savings as well as a few other benefits we really enjoy. We just weren't keeping enough of out money there to be able to avoid fees. I had banked with them for YEARS.
That was really the only reason because our local branches had great customer service and really nice & helpful people working there.
I do still have my Amazon credit card though them though!

Hmm, looks like I won't be going to chase I'll have to research
They were too fee happy for me. They bought out Washington Mutual who had good choices for second chance accounts and then slowly got rid of every feature that made it useful. I was not one of the second chance customers but my income was not high enough to avoid fees. At the time it was at least one direct deposit of over $500. I was paid weekly so that would have been multiple checks. They actually drove me to exclusively use my credit union which is entirely online. I sometimes miss being able to get cash at a bank but not enough to deal with the types of issues I was seeing at banks.
We switched from a local credit union to Chase 4 or 5 years ago. They had an offer for $200, I think, if you opened a checking and savings account so we took advantage. Ive been happy with them and have never had trouble. We use them for checking, one of our two credit cards, and a small portion of our savings for emergencies and we've never paid for any of our accounts. Our credit union had recently changed their terms and started charging $6/mo. unless you had direct deposit AND 12 debit transactions per month. The direct deposit was fine but I prefer to use cash and wasn't getting the required number of debit transactions per month.
