I thought Little Women was fantastic. I have seen the 1994 version a ton of times so I had no problem with timeline since I know the story and events by heart. She managed to make a story that has been brought to film a ton of other times feel different. And the casting was (mostly) fantastic.
In general the Oscar noms feel very white and very male AGAIN.
um also I think the wrong song from Frozen 2 was nominated, should have been Show Yourself. I cry EVERY TIME I listen to that song. Into the Unknown is great too but Show Yourself is the showstopper.

I agree with everyone saying they have no interest in Joker. I don't either, and even DH isn't clamoring to see it. And that's saying something - he's all about DC and that universe.
I have a feeling we'll be hearing a bunch of snarky comments by the presenters this year. And for good reason.

Me too!!! Show Yourself is amazing. I listened to the song before seeing the movie and the movie made me that much more emotional while listening.
Also, while I haven't seen the actual animated movie noms, it does seem like Frozen 2 is considered a major snub in that category so eff the Oscars lol.

No. The wrong song was nominated, but it should've been Lost in the Woods.
Also maybe this is controversial, but I think better TV shows and mini series are being made than movies in recent years. I like character development told over a period of time vs. crammed into a film though. TV shows are being given bigger budgets than they used to and I think the casting is more diverse and stories way more interesting.

The end of Little Women was, I feel like for me as a "1994 gotta have that slobbery Winona Ryder/Christian Bale kiss or its worth nothing" Little Women lover, was a moment where I realized I had really grown up. Of course 8-year-old me, a kid with her head in the clouds full of romance, thought the 1994 version was the be-all, end-all. The choice that was made at the end of Gerwig's movie was magnificent and really resonated with me, a 33-year-old just trying to have something to show for this life.
But, I guess that's the difference between me and the dudes who nominate for awards.
ETA - that movie had me in full-blown hysterics. My favorite part was Jo and Beth by the sea as Beth got sicker and was very plain with Jo telling her that she couldn't stop it, like the tide going out. The wind was blowing the sand on the beach away from them and I ugly cried there and when I later thought of it. My husband lost his brother to a long-term illness a year and a half ago, and it just rang so true to many conversations we all had to have during his illness.
I dunno, man, I'm really disappointed to see other people saying they didn't like the movie as much as me. How dare you not have my exact opinion on things???

I noticed Tom Hanks as Mr. Rogers was nominated for Best Supporting Actor. I never saw it but...wouldn't the guy playing Mr. Rogers be considered the lead?
Also, the entire slate of Best Supporting Actor nominations made me wonder if we are actually in the year 2020.

No, Jothathan Rhys's character is the main character. It's ultimately probably debatable though.

The movie is actually about Mr Rogers's effect on the life of the reporter character, so he's (TH) not really the lead of the movie. But I do think it's weird they usually put people in the category they think they will win in, and it seems like both the Lead and Supporting are both locks for other people this year, so they could have gone with lead.
tangentially related? I saw Tina Fey and Amy Poehler will host the Golden Globes next year!
has a host for the Oscars been chosen? I thought I read there wasn't one.
No, no host this year for the second year in a row. I was just reading about how ratings finally went up last year when they went hostless so they're sticking with it.
I'm pissed The Farewell got shut out. In addition to Awkwafina, Lulu Wang should have been nominated for best director and/or best original screenplay. It was the best movie I saw last year, so I'd have liked to see it for best picture as well, but that was always a long shot.
Another fucking travesty. Screw the Oscars AGAIN. I looooooooooooved this movie.

I listen to a podcast called "This had Oscar buzz" and many times they are foiled by a single nomination for costuming or special effects or best original song and therefore can't dive into a movie that had a ton of buzz for acting and best picture but really fell flat. But they'll be able to do Cats now!
It always freaks me out to hear him in interviews and remember he's not American. His accent is flawless.
I feel like English/Welsh actors seem to do a much better job at a generic American accent than American actors do at English accents. I think because English accents are so distinctive from region to region in a close proximity. It really impressed me.
