It always freaks me out to hear him in interviews and remember he's not American. His accent is flawless.
I feel like English/Welsh actors seem to do a much better job at a generic American accent than American actors do at English accents. I think because English accents are so distinctive from region to region in a close proximity. It really impressed me.
Eh, I'm not 100% on that. I clocked every single UK actor doing an American accent on Downton Abbey within like 2 sentences. Which is why Matthew Rhys so impresses me. Also, the redheaded guy who played Captain Winter and in Homeland. He's good, too.
I’m glad to see JoJo Rabbit nominated for Best Picture. I thought it was outstanding!
I LOVED it although I know it's a bit "controversial" for some critics/people. It was very unique and ran the full gamut of emotions.
But sure, Oscar, let's honor more movies about mobsters, soldiers, and DC comic characters. (That's not to say 1917 wasn't good - it really was and I wouldn't be mad if it wins best picture - but it's not THAT fresh and exciting because it's still a movie about people on a mission during a war.)

Ugh I forgot about J Lo! I loved Hustlers too
I was actually a Little Women virgin (I've never read the book or seen any adaptations) but I loved it sooooo much. And I didn't find the dual timelines confusing at all. I cried basically start to finish. I liked it so much I immediately watched Frances Ha because I needed more Greta in my life.

Damien Lewis? Wait, have you never watched Band of Brothers? he is still that character to me in everything I see him in.
I adored Jojo Rabbit. ADORED. Might be my favorite of the year, just because of how different it was and I both laughed and cried.
The Irishman was so overrated, the aging effects were horrible and distracting.
1917 was incredible. The filming was amazing, I would go watch it again just to watch some of the scenes another time, they were so beautifully done.
Little Women was good, but I didn't love the non-linear timeline, I felt like it was harder to get into the storylines and really care about the characters. I do think it's a crime that Greta Gerwig wasn't nominated, though, because it was beautifully done otherwise.
I didn't see Joker, Ford vs. Ferrari or finish Marriage Story.
...Which I've been afraid to watch too even though I really want to.
You really should. It's more on the disturbing/psychological end of the 'horror' spectrum. So good.
Same with Us. Another really good one.
Ooooh now as a self-described weenie, I would absolutely recommend Get Out or Parasite to a non-horror person. But Us scared the shit out of me. I'd say of the 3, Parasite is the least scary, then Get Out, then Us.
um also I think the wrong song from Frozen 2 was nominated, should have been Show Yourself. I cry EVERY TIME I listen to that song. Into the Unknown is great too but Show Yourself is the showstopper.
No. The wrong song was nominated, but it should've been Lost in the Woods.
From what I've heard it's not really horror in the traditional sense. More like in the Get Out sense.
...Which I've been afraid to watch too even though I really want to.
I legit can’t stand horror movies and won’t watch them. I saw Get Out and while I was in suspense and scared, it is not what I consider horror that I cannot watch.

what do you think the age for kids being able to see it is. S has asked (she’s 9 and her favorite movie is Pitch Perfect so take into account I am a bad parent)
eclaires I took my 10 year old. She followed it just fine and liked Jo. But she was PISSED and didn't talk to me for 2 hours afterwards because Beth dies. She was so upset. She, generally, doesn't love sad movies but one of her favorites is Big Hero Six, which also deals with a sibling death, so I figured she'd be fine. She was NOT. She was also super bothered by Jo's speech about being lonely.
Also maybe this is controversial, but I think better TV shows and mini series are being made than movies in recent years. I like character development told over a period of time vs. crammed into a film though. TV shows are being given bigger budgets than they used to and I think the casting is more diverse and stories way more interesting.
I think it's only controversial among the people who believe a movie has to be completely tortuous to be an Oscar contender! This, among many other reasons, is why I find the Globes more enjoyable than the Oscars. TV today is fucking amazing.
My unpopular opinions include: 1. I dreaded seeing Joker but ended up thinking it was excellent. Phenomenal acting and cinematography. Disturbing as all hell. 2. Adam Driver gave the best performance of the year in Marriage Story. He has hustled the hell out of this year. That movie was hard to watch, but also so so good. 3. I liked The Irishman.

@@@ I took my barely 8 year old. She loved it!
ETA: and then she came home and started writing her own novels and started reading the book (she made it to page 18 before declaring to too hard to read 🤣)

@@@ Good to know! I was debating making her read the book and us watching it once it’s out of the theaters (we frequently read books together because while she is a very advanced reader she is also a reluctant reader and likes to read with someone), but I know she’d like to see it in theater.

@@@ Someone suggested in some film podcast I listen to (pop culture happy hour maybe?) just let your kids watch this and don’t impose a read the book first rule on this one.
I really want to see Parasite but am somewhat terrified to do so. I tried watching Bong Joon Ho's Snowpiercer and was so disturbed about 20 minutes in that I had to turn it off. (And not totally related, but after watching Hereditary, disturbing horror is...something I'm really wary of at this point).

@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@
I took my 11 yo boy to Little Women, he had watched part of the PBS BBC LW miniseries with me last year, so he was interested in the movie. I could see a younger kid who gets antsy getting a little bit bored during LW at parts, but there is nothing inappropriate about it.
For me, it just requires more context. Like, you have to be in on the joke a little bit or it just sounds dated. It's not a traditional "single" the way the others are.
And 100% "Show Yourself" was the better song of the two "anthem" songs.
Am I the only one who doesn't get Adam Driver? I haven't seen Marriage Story but I've never really understood him or thought he was all that. Did he deliver something he's never come close to approximating or am I just a hater?
Definitely thought Frozen II was better than a couple of the others nominated in the category. Disappointed at the many snubs this year. Sandler deserved a nom, so did J-Lo and Greta (obviously). And Marriage story was alright, but I don't really think Laura Dern had such an exceptional part/performance that it deserved a nom, either. I thought The Irishman was overrated, as well. Couldn't get through Two Popes, not my thing. Still want to see Harriet, Parasite and 1917.
I liked Bohemian Rhapsody. I'm going to be "that person" and admit I haven't watched a single one of the noms, BUT I at least have a desire to watch some of them.
I liked Bohemian Rhapsody too. It was fun and entertaining.
I always love seeing how differently people feel about these things. I loved BH and thought Rocketman was mediocre, at best. I felt like I was watching a satire of his story the whole time.

Caveat: I have never seen Girls which may influence my opinion because someone told me that I wouldn’t like him if I’d watched Girls.
I also have not seen Marriage Story but I LOVE Driver in Star Wars. To me, his acting and the story made a villain compelling and generally I find villains somewhat one note especially in blockbusters (hi, Marvel).

I think Adam Driver is a good actor, but I think the best part about him is that he chooses a range of interesting projects.
Basically the consensus is that he's a good actor, but because he isn't Brad Pitt level hot people think he's super special and interesting or something?

AGREED. I'm not sure where the hate for this movie is coming from.

Ok I saw Girls (I know, I know). I could not figure out if he was a truly terrible actor or if was effortlessly portraying a complete sociopath. I settled on the former. This is probably why I don't like him. Once you see that performance, you can't unsee it.
