As many of you know by now, every year we have an Oscar party with food themed to the Best Picture nominees. Ideally they'd be puns on the name ("Corndog Millionaire" for "Slumdog Millionaire," "Up in the Éclair" for "Up in the Air"), but if we need to we've gone outside that to make it something prominently featured in the film (e.g., for There Will Be Blood it was milkshakes). A full slideshow of previous foods, or at least for as long as I've been altering posters to match, is here:
So, here are the Best Picture nominees for this year.
Best Picture:
"1917” “Ford v Ferrari” “The Irishman” “Jojo Rabbit” “Joker” “Little Women” “Marriage Story” “Once Upon a Time … in Hollywood” “Parasite.”
Suggestions are welcome. There will be a strong emphasis on easy-to-prepare stuff -- we suffered greatly when they went up from 5 Best Picture Nominees!
Sign that I've been on the boards too long: I heard about the announcements on my way into work and thought, "Oh! It's time for the Oscar-food theme thread!" LOL
I’m not at all a movie person, but I heard that they nominees were announced so I came straight here for your annual post!
"1917” Nineteen Seven-bean Salad
“Ford v Ferrari” Sword v Ferrari - swordfish Sword v Havarti - small cubes of Havarti cheese on sword toothpicks
“The Irishman” The IrishBread (Irish soda bread) The Irish Flan (flan with Bailey’s flavoring?)
“Jojo Rabbit” Jojo Rarebit Dough-Dough Rabbit (use a rabbit cookie cutter to make something from cookie dough or pizza dough) Low and Slow Rabbit (slow-braised rabbit)
“Joker” Coke-r (Coca-Cola) Soak-er (rum- or syrup-soaked cake)
“Little Women” buy a tiny cookie cutter of a woman and make tiny cookies Fiddle Women (Fiddle Faddle popcorn) Vittle Women (whatever food qualifies as “vittles”: culinarylore.com/food-history:vittles-origin/)
“Marriage Story” Cabbage Story - stuffed cabbage rolls, cabbage egg rolls, or cole slaw Marriage Dory - John Dory fish, or if you can find candy/cookies with Dory from Finding Nemo: www.amazon.com/Disney-Finding-Dory-Candy-Characters/dp/B01NAYR9K9 Marriage Nori - something in nori seaweed wraps
“Once Upon a Time … in Hollywood” Once Upon a Thyme - something with thyme seasoning Once BonBon a Time... Once a-Naan a Time/Thyme... (would thyme be gross on top of naan?) Once Upon a Lime - lime drink, lime tart, lime Jell-o, lime candy Once Upon a Vine - Red Vines candy Once Upon a Time in Lollywood - lollipops Once Upon a Lime in Lollywood - lime lollipops
“Parasite.” Pair-of-bites (two small items on a skewer, like a grape tomato and a mozzarella cube; or watermelon and feta; etc) Farro-site - farro side dish or salad Marrow-site - roasted bone marrow (probably don’t want to go to this length but I thought I’d list it anyway)
Hoho Rabbit- You could put sugar rabbit ears on Hohos. (https://www.countrykitchensa.com/shop/occasions/dec-ons-molded-sugar-bunny-ears/42/552/907/652798/?gclid=EAIaIQobChMI6oX5i_aA5wIVw8DACh0k5wcZEAQYAiABEgKRwPD_BwE)
Little Women = Little Debbies and just have a basket of snackes
Joker = Smoker. I feel like there's a lot of things you could do there.
Parasite = Pear-asite. Something with pears. Maybe with blue cheese, since mold is kind of like a parasite.
I like the suggestion above of Once Upon a Thyme...in Hollywood. Pizza sprinkled heavily with thyme would be easy and good. If you wanted to bake., do once a upon a lime, make lime flavored shortbread, and cut it into star shapes for the Hollywood walk of fame.
Marriage Story....no idea. Maybe Italian Wedding Soup or Mexican Wedding cookies?
The Irishcan (Guinness) Little Ramen (either the soup or salad topped with uncooked ramen) Gourd v Ferrari (stuffed squash) Chambord v Campari (cocktails)
