“With sorrow—for this Court, but more, for the many millions of American women who have today lost a fundamental constitutional protection—we dissent,”
I watched it too. I was sad to see Lexi give up but loved all the different stories. I was grossed out by Gabi's family. I get trying to earn what they can, while they can, but that stuff at the end with the dad telling a gym how the girls had to fundraise to participate in her visit just rubbed me wrong.
@princessbubbleyum , Yeah, I think the documentary team did a great job letting Gabi's family hang themselves. I felt so sorry for her on the day she was in the library and just hung up on them.
And I was so sad about Lexi, and I so hope that Morgan finds a direction too.
The shot of La'Darius brother watching them at the championship with the tears rolling down his cheek was such a great documentary shot.

I just read that article and Morgan and Jerry are back too. I'm sad Jerry didn't take his scholarship and go to Kentucky. I know he loves being there and part of the team, but it seems like he should also be looking at the long term.

I really enjoyed it. My DD actually knows 2 of the girls and Calvin, the coach at ASR was one of her coaches her last year of cheer. It was really cool to see people you actually know on a show.

I loved the series so much. I love the students, especially Morgan and Jerry. And poor Sherbs. I was surprised by all of the injuries though. They need to have more safeguards in place! It seemed like someone suffered a serious injury every week.

The article I posted above said they were there for four months, filming 12 hours a day and they have a lot of safeguards in place. I think Netflix probably just selectively edited it to look like they were happening every day or two.

I watched the first episode. And I do not get the love. It shows just how abusive this sport is.
The kids all seem like they have great stories, but it seems like the coach is not great. I read up a bit more on it, and there are instances where she has them train while injured and such. It just seems wrong to glamorize this “family” dynamic when it’s not super healthy for the kids who are pretty vulnerable.

She does. There’s a scene in which one of the guys got hurt during an all star competition. She explicitly said do not cheer the next day. Do not do it. And he did. He didn’t listen. At practice on the following Monday he was in so much pain, but she made him work anyway. I get it, if you’re ok performing injured for someone else, you’re ok doing it here.
Gabi’s whole family was the worst! Even her sister was awful.
So many of them had sad background stories. I wonder if that was mostly true of the group as a whole or if they picked them because of it. I wouldn’t be surprised if it was true of a lot of them, I think people with unstable backgrounds might appreciate someone like Monica who is that involved with them. The last thing I’d want in college is someone telling me I need a study buddy but they all seemed to appreciate it.

It didn’t even seem like her idea. She was just a money maker to them. It was gross and they clearly didn’t have her best interests at heart, only money. Her parents didn’t even seem to realize it would end and that they should plan for the future, her mom didn’t care if she got a degree or not, just that she was on the team.

Yes! He was a great student. No one needs to go to community college for 4 years unless it is some specialized (academic) program.

I enjoyed it as a peek into a different world/the people angle but it did confirm to me how awful the world of competitive sports is.
I think a lot of the cheerleaders came from unfortunate circumstances and really bought into the “family” aspect for better or worse. Monica was not my favorite at all.

You should watch the Aaron Hernandez documentary. I really don’t like football much, but now I really don’t like it.

I'm not done with the series yet but Monica doesn't seem concerned at all when someone gets hurt. Maybe it's editing but that stood out to me.

I was trying to think back to my college soccer days and I don’t remember my coach ever seeming too concerned lol. And he was a nice guy. The athletic trainers would all run on the field. I mean he would certainly be nice to us but really the athletic trainers took the lead of being "caring" and making the treatment plan. IMO Monica didn’t seem mean or anything out of the norm for a coach of adults.

I played soccer in college and that really just comes with the territory. We had study hall (well I didn’t after freshmen year cause I had good grades lol), curfew, no drinking before games policy, etc. The assistants would peep in on classes to make sure we attended certain ones. There are a lot of "rules" that come with being a collegiate student athlete.

I watched it too. Pretty awful. Urban Meyer and Bill Belichick may not have been holding the gun, but they certainly turned their heads while his behavior got worse and worse since he was delivering on the field.

I am not positive but I swear during that call you could hear her mom say something about Arbonne. My head went to thinking that made sense - doing whatever she could, and pushing others for the sake of a buck.

I was tempted! I’ll check out. I am not a sports person but I love any documentary about these niche cultures.

That would drive me insane and is part of why I was never a sports person! I hate having people all up in my business.
In the show, the ones who were featured really seemed to need and appreciate that aspect and Monica in particular. Not one really seemed annoyed about it!
I loved this too. Totally agree that Gabi’s family suck!
If you all haven’t watched any of the seasons of Last Chance U also on Netflix it’s the same producers as Cheer and same format. About jr college football. The first two seasons are the best.

Well for me since they were paying for my education I didn’t mind following rules. I definitely thrived as a person being a part of a team, lots of life long lessons.
