We live in an old home with original corner built in cabinets in two corners of our dining room. We need a large size rug in there as it’s a big room and wonder if it would be incredibly odd to have the corners trimmed and bound to accommodate the corner cabinets.
If we go with a smaller rug the table/chairs don’t all fit on it properly. Thank you!
This is the best example I could find for what I’m talking about. The first pic. See the way it’s an area rug but it’s sorta cut to accommodate that corner tv cabinet?
^^^^^^^^ why that rug stops halfway at the fireplace would be a topic for a whole other post - lol. Odd. But I couldn’t find a better example to explain my dilemma.
Yes it can. Search in your area for a rug binding service, usually done by a rug supplier. You can provide them precise measurements and a diagram of how you would like it cut and bound. It may cost more, since the inside corner will need to be done by hand, but usually costing is based on the total perimeter length.

We had a puppy chew one side of our very expensive rug and we were able to have it bound in the zig-zag shape left behind, so it's definitely possible! It doesn't look great, but it was never going to, so maybe they didn't care so much. It's under a piece of furniture in our room.
It’s really common with sea grass rugs so I’m sure it’s possible for others. I think you just see it less because it’s $$$ and there are fewer options for patterns than an off-the-shelf option.
I don't think it would look dumb, but a smaller rug that doesn't need to be cut might look better. For custom-cut rug I think a solid color or subtle pattern would look better than the example you posted. I'm having trouble picturing your room - when you say the table and chairs won't fit on a smaller rug, do you mean they won't fit on the next standard size down, or that a rug that's big enough would have to run all the way to the cabinets?
Buying a carpet remnant and having it bound might be easier/less expensive than buying a finished rug and having it cut and bound, but there's less selection and it may take time to find one you like.

If you don't already have a rug, what about Flor tiles? They can be cut to fit and don't require any finishing to the edges. (They can be pricey, though.)
yes, you can do this, no, I don't think it would look dumb. you will probably have the best luck going to a smaller carpet/rug store instead of a place like home depot. the rug store I go to here (DC area) does custom jobs like that all the time. they did the runner for my stairs and bound the edges here at the house so they could get the pieces just right.
You can add binding yourself too. All my rugs are cheapies from Target so I had considered the DIY binding after finding out the price of binding from a carpeting store.

Not the point, but I think that’s the top of an end table, not the floor. It’s just lined up perfectly at that angle in the photo.
Definitely possible - I have several friends who have done this. We had a rug cut and bound for our dining room in an odd size (8x13) but they do different cut outs/shapes etc. The place we went was a regular carpet store that also sold remnants - it was awesome because we were able to get the rug made out of the remnants which was about half the price of a typical rug that general size (if you are in the Boston area I’ll point you in their direction!)
